Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Maya Rodgers. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Maya, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I honestly came with the idea from a bracelet. Yes, a bracelet! I saw it and thought to myself “the roses would make some cute earrings” so I bought all the colors. When I wore them someone saw them, screamed because she loved them and bought them right out of my ears. So it gave me a thought that there was a market for what I liked in accessories.
Maya, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Maya, but I go by MeMe. I love the nonsensical, eccentric & out of the box kind of art that makes you ”squint” your eyes. I got into wearable art because I wanted to design an accessory that makes a small statement but solidifies a look & makes it cohesive to the person wearing it. I want my clients to feels like they’ve conquered whatever they’re goal was whenever they adorn their lobes with Fyre Kandee Kouture. I want my clients to know that each piece is made to order by hand & with positive intentions. Love, care & thought is put into each design and name, everything has meaning & purpose to me.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
My most effective strategy has been word of mouth honestly. I have been able to open my mouth and put my art in the hands of a few style influencers who have been gracious enough to style my art. After styling my art or just wearing my art and tagging my business pages I have gained momentum and more clients.
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
I sell on my own site. I prefer to do it this way after having done extensive research I just didn’t see the reason to give away such a large percentage of the money I could potentially earn. I also didn’t think it fair to increase the prices of my art as compensation for that as it, in my opinion, would be hurtful to the client & I pride myself on my integrity.
