We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Maya Kay a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Maya, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
My most meaning full project that I’ve worked on is my latest and first ever solo rnb album “Heart of the Bay” that just released this year on February 14th for Valentine’s Day! This album means a lot to me because it’s been something I been wanting to do for a few years now. I have sang in the past for others but never really had a lot of my own solo tracks. A lot of my fans and supporters have been asking when I will drop solo music so I decided to this year and it has been such a success! I worked side by side with Joseph Kay on this album and I am so thankful for his help and guidance. Joseph Kay helped bring my vision to life with his own premade beats, music production and vocal coaching. Since this is my debut album I really wanted to go big and make sure I represented who I am so fans can get to know more of my filipino culture, my hometown of Hayward, CA and my passion for empowering all women!
Maya, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a singer, model and business owner of Kay Models Modeling Agency (@officialkaymodels) from Hayward, CA! I have always been fascinated with the entertainment industry as young as five years old. I am a 90s baby and I idolize pop stars of that time such as Britney Spears and inspire to be as successful as her! My grandmother saw that star in me at that young age and would always take photos of me in the best dresses singing and dancing for everyone! That trained me be confident and comfortable in front of the camera and crowds. Once I was old enough I participated in extra activities such as gymnastics, hip hop dance, theater, cheerleading and more!
I got my big break into the industry when I got booked to model for a music video that featured Rap Legends Too Short and Snoop Dogg! From there I really started pursuing and focusing on my modeling career getting published on several international magazine covers to landing big brand deals. My modeling career became an instant success that I felt the urge to share my knowledge to those who want to also pursue a modeling career but don’t know how or where to start. Which is why I started my own modeling agency, Kay Models. I create and provide a safe place for models to learn and grow while at the same time satisfying each client with professional talent giving everyone an unforgettable experience. I believe that’s what sets me apart from part! Being able to follow my dreams and help others grow is something that I’m very proud of!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I built my audience on my own by consistently creating and sharing content that everyone can relate to! Not only that, but I also share my support as well by engaging with others and networking. My advice for those starting to build their presence on social media is to stay consistent and most importantly be yourself! What may work for others may not work for you, vice versa, and that’s why you always have to stay true to yourself.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think what society can do best to support others is to just spread more love and peace. I’m very big on that and I believe the world could use more joy and happiness.
