We recently connected with Maya Enriquez and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Maya thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
My name is Maya Enriquez, and this is the story of how I took a big risk that changed everything.
Since I was 12, I dreamed of becoming an obstetrician gynecologist. I wanted to make labor and delivery a beautiful experience for families and travel the world, learning about postpartum care in different cultures. For years, I thought this was my calling. But when I got into college, I started feeling lost. My passion for medicine began to fade, and I didn’t know what my future held anymore.
One day, while scrolling through Instagram, I saw a video of a Latina woman baking Tres Leches cakes and pastries (casitabakes). Something clicked in that moment. I thought to myself, “I can do that!” That same week, I went out, bought ingredients, and started practicing. Every evening after school, I’d bake, learning the art of Tres Leches cakes from scratch. At first, it felt like a hobby, but as I got better, I realized this could be something bigger.
That’s when I had a conversation with my family, and together, we came up with the idea to turn this into a real business—Muy Bueno Bakery.
It wasn’t easy. I was still in school, working nights, and using my extra cash to support the business. Every penny I made went into ingredients, packaging, and all the little things a bakery needs. But I believed in it, even when the pressure was on.
Our first big break came when we did our first pop-up event. It was a huge moment for us. My entire family came out to support, helping me pass out cake samples and talk to customers. The booth was so popular that people started lining up. We could hardly keep up with demand, but that night, when we came home, we realized something: this could be the business that changes our lives. I started to imagine what it would be like to get my parents out of their 9-5 jobs, to pay my family to work for Muy Bueno Bakery, and build something we could be proud of together.
A few months later, my dad said something that made me pause. He told me, “I can see Muy Bueno Bakery becoming successful. You know why? Because you’re growing fast. Did you notice that you stopped putting your own money into the business and now the business is paying for itself?” I hadn’t even realized it. In just a few short months, we had gone from barely scraping by to selling cakes every week. People kept coming back to support us at every pop-up, and the love from our supporters became our driving force.
Looking back, I know that taking the risk to start this business was the best decision I ever made. What started as a dream of becoming a doctor has turned into a different kind of dream—a dream where I can bring joy to people through my baking, while building a legacy for my family. And we’re just getting started.
Maya, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Maya Enriquez, and I’m one of the cofounders of Muy Bueno Bakery, alongside my sister, Jazmine Enriquez. Together, we built this business with a dream of sharing our love for baking and culture with the world.
My journey into this industry was unexpected. I initially planned on being an obstetrician gynecologist, but during college, I lost my passion for that path. Then one day, I saw a video of a Latina woman baking Tres Leches cakes, and it sparked something inside me. I started experimenting with baking, and what began as a hobby quickly grew into something much bigger. Jazmine and I decided to take the leap and turn our passion into a business.
At Muy Bueno Bakery, we specialize in creating specialty Tres Leches Cakes including our most popular flavors: Caramel Pecan, Carrot, Chocolate Oreo, Vanilla and many more. Our goal is to provide unique, delicious desserts that offer a taste of home, culture, and tradition with every bite.
What sets us apart is not just our wide variety of flavors but the personal connection we share with our customers. For us, baking is more than just a business—it’s about family and creating something meaningful that brings people together. We pour love into every cake, ensuring that each customer can indulge in something truly Muy Bueno.
One of our proudest moments was our first pop-up event, where our family and friends showed up to support us, and the response was overwhelming. People lined up to try our cakes, and we knew we were onto something special. Since then, we’ve grown steadily, thanks to our community’s love and support.
Looking ahead, we have big dreams for Muy Bueno Bakery. We want to expand, with the vision of opening multiple stores, similar to Carlo’s Bakery, where everyone can enjoy our cakes and desserts.
Ultimately, Muy Bueno Bakery is about more than just sweets—it’s about family, tradition, and creating something lasting. We’re excited to continue growing, bringing new flavors to the table, and welcoming everyone to indulge in something truly Muy Bueno!
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Funding Muy Bueno Bakery was all about hard work, sacrifice, and a lot of support from my family. When we started, I was juggling school and working nights. I used the extra cash I earned to fund the business—everything from ingredients to packaging came directly from my own pocket. We didn’t have any outside funding or loans, so every penny I made went right back into growing the bakery.
What truly made a difference was my family’s support. They didn’t just cheer from the sidelines—they were hands-on from the very start. At our first pop-up event, they were there, helping set up, passing out cake samples, and getting people excited about what we had to offer. The response was incredible, and it was the first moment when we felt like this could turn into something big.
About 6 months into the business we noticed it had become self-sustaining. That realization was a game-changer for us. It showed us that we were on the right track and that this could be more than just a business—it could be the legacy that builds a future for our family.
Our goal is to grow Muy Bueno Bakery into something that provides for our family and future generations. We want to expand, open more stores, and create a lasting impact. Every step we take is about building something meaningful, not just for us but for everyone who supports us.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
My cofounder and business partner is my sister, Jazmine Enriquez. Our bond is strong, having grown up together and shared many dreams. When I discovered my passion for baking Tres Leches cakes, Jazmine was immediately on board. She took on the role of handling all aspects of baking, perfecting our recipes, and crafting each cake with care.
While Jazmine focuses on baking, I manage the operational side of Muy Bueno Bakery. My responsibilities include overseeing logistics, managing events, handling customer interactions, and ensuring everything runs smoothly. Our different roles complement each other perfectly, allowing us to address every aspect of the business effectively.
But Jazmine and I are not alone in this journey. Our parents and two younger sisters are integral to the success of Muy Bueno Bakery. They help with everything from baking and packaging to supporting us at events and handling day-to-day tasks. Their dedication and hard work have been crucial in getting the business off the ground and maintaining its growth.
Even though Jazmine and I are the founders, Muy Bueno Bakery is truly a family business. It’s our collective effort, passion, and shared vision that drive the business forward. We’re all committed to building something lasting and meaningful that honors our heritage and provides for our family. Together, we’re not just creating a bakery; we’re building a legacy for future generations.
