We were lucky to catch up with Maya Barbery recently and have shared our conversation below.

Maya, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later

If I could go back in time, I would have launched Bolivian Mystic alongside my first business, Angel’s Mystical Artifacts, back in 2021. Angel’s Mystical Artifacts grew quickly and even received a feature on Canvas Rebel, and looking back, I can see how powerful that early momentum was. At the time, I was fully immersed in building my first brand, learning the rhythm of entrepreneurship, and discovering how to show up confidently in the metaphysical community. I didn’t yet realize that I was also laying the perfect foundation for what would eventually become Bolivian Mystic.
Bolivian Mystic officially came to life in North Carolina in 2023, at a point when I had more clarity, more experience, and a deeper sense of my own spiritual identity. Starting it later allowed me to bring a more grounded vision and a stronger voice to the work—but I can also see how launching both businesses together would have allowed Bolivian Mystic to grow in parallel with Angel’s Mystical Artifacts. The visibility, audience growth, and brand recognition that Angel’s received in those early years could have easily extended to Bolivian Mystic as well.
Even though Bolivian Mystic has already built a beautiful and engaged community, I do feel that starting earlier would have expanded our reach even more. The two brands support each other energetically and creatively, and growing them side by side from the beginning would have amplified that synergy.
That said, I also trust the timing. Beginning Bolivian Mystic in 2023 meant I entered this chapter with more confidence, more experience, and a clearer sense of purpose. So while I sometimes wish I had started sooner, I also recognize that the version of me in 2021 was still becoming the person who could hold this work with the depth and intention it deserves.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

I am an intuitive reader with more than 30 years of experience, carrying forward a lineage of hereditary mystics, intuitives, and witches. I was born in Bolivia, and my family’s roots trace back to the Celtic regions of Spain and the United Kingdom. Growing up between these two cultures shaped the way I see and move through the world. The Andean mountains and the Celtic isles both live within me, and I draw wisdom from each lineage every time I sit with a client.
From my Bolivian heritage, I work closely with the Apus—the mountain spirits who guide and protect—along with Mama Quilla, the Moon Mother, and Pachamama, our beloved Mother Earth. From my Celtic ancestry, I call upon the guidance of my ancestors and the magic of the land: the rivers, forests, sun, and moon. These two traditions weave together naturally in my work, creating a style of reading that is culturally rooted, spiritually rich, and deeply intuitive.
My intuitive journey began at 19, when I learned to read cigarettes—an indigenous Bolivian divination practice passed down through generations. In cigarette readings, I interpret the way the cigarette burns, the movement and shape of the ashes, and the patterns that form as it burns down. The ashes reveal where energy is flowing, where it is blocked, what is being released, and what is trying to emerge. It is one of the oldest forms of divination in my culture, and it remains one of the most powerful tools I use.
Over the decades, I’ve explored many forms of divination, expanding my intuitive abilities and refining my craft. Today, I offer a variety of oracle-based readings, each one guided by my connection to spirit, my ancestors, and the unseen world. My approach is grounded in guidance without judgment—a space where clients can show up exactly as they are, without fear of being criticized, corrected, or shamed. My role is to illuminate, not to impose; to help people reconnect with their own inner knowing, not to tell them who they should be.
In addition to intuitive readings, I am also a Reiki Master and Violet Flame energy healing. Reiki allows me to channel universal life force energy to support balance, relaxation, and emotional clarity. Violet Flame work focuses on transmutation—helping clients release stagnant or heavy energy, dissolve old patterns, and invite in renewal. Together, these modalities create a powerful energetic reset that complements the insight and clarity offered through my readings.
My work supports clients who are seeking direction, emotional grounding, spiritual insight, or simply a moment of stillness in a chaotic world. What sets my practice apart is the blend of cultural lineage, ancestral connection, intuitive depth, and energy-healing experience. My readings are mystical yet practical, spiritual yet accessible. I don’t aim to predict the future—I aim to illuminate the path and empower the seeker.
What I’m most proud of is the way my work honors my ancestors and keeps my cultural traditions alive. Every session—whether a reading or an energy healing—is approached with intention, respect, and authenticity. I want clients and followers to know that when they sit with me, they are stepping into a sacred space where their story is held with care, compassion, and reverence.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?

I’ve built my reputation by genuinely getting to know the people in my community and showing up with sincerity. For me, everything begins with connection. I take the time to build real relationships—listening to people’s stories, learning who they are, and letting them get to know me as a person before anything else. That foundation of trust makes all the difference.
Because of that, when people discover that I offer intuitive readings or Reiki, they already feel a sense of comfort. We’ve established rapport. They know I’m someone who will hold space for them with understanding, compassion, and guidance without judgment. And over time, many have shared how the guidance they receive has been genuinely helpful—offering clarity, direction, and a sense of being supported right when they needed it most.
The same is true for my energy work. My Reiki and Violet Flame sessions have helped people release heaviness, find emotional balance, and reconnect with themselves in a deeper way. When someone feels lighter, clearer, or more grounded after a session, it reinforces why I do this work and why the relationship behind the work matters so much.
Word of mouth has grown naturally because people feel seen, supported, and respected in my presence. I believe that’s what truly builds a reputation in this kind of work—not just the services you offer, but the way you make people feel when they’re with you, and the real impact the guidance and healing have on their lives. Because of this, people recommend me to friends and family.

Do you have multiple revenue streams – if so, can you talk to us about those streams and how your developed them?

My business does have multiple, interconnected revenue streams. As mentioned earlier, I also run Angel’s Mystical Artifacts, a mobile metaphysical shop. When I’m at markets and events, I blend both sides of my work by offering intuitive readings alongside my merchandise. This creates a natural flow between the two businesses—people who come for the shop often discover my readings, and those who come for readings are introduced to my curated metaphysical items.
In addition to that, I operate Modern Mystic Markets, where I manage and host vendor events. At these markets, I either read, vend, or do both, which allows me to generate income through multiple channels at once. Each branch of my work supports the others, creating a cohesive ecosystem where community, metaphysical offerings, and intuitive services all work together.
