Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to May Stamper. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
May, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
I do photography for some local area rescues taking photos of adoptable animals. I have gained many friends through the rescue world over 25 years. I also started offering photography sessions for families that were low income, to provide them with family memories. My first paying job was a rescue friend Jess’e. She asked me to do family photos. From there, things blossomed, and I have several repeat clients each year.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started Picture Perfect by May in 2016 on a professional level. Since I had been volunteering my photography skills for rescues, I wanted to offer it to people as well. I offer photography sessions for couples, senior portraits, individuals, maternity, etc. and I also sell my wildlife/nature/landscape photos. There are a few things I am really proud of, one is I decided to go to college to get my A.A.S. in Professional Photography. My boyfriend helped coax me out of my comfort zone and helped me see that going back to school at any age is well worth the time and effort. The second thing is I have maintained a 4.0 GPA during my college career and am a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Thirdly, I was published in a German magazine Der Seeadler, with one of my eagle photos.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Digital Marketing has been the biggest source of new clients for me. I post my photography work on my Facebook business page, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok. Getting your work out there for the world to see is vital in the photography business. Being a wildlife photographer as well gives me a smaller niche market to sell my work to.
Personal referrals has also been a tremendous help and offering my photography services to small local businesses in exchange for them sharing my business name/card with clients who inquire about the office photography work.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I created business pages for all social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, & Pintrist) to share my photography work. I also have a blog on WordPress about my wildlife/nature/landscape photography.
Digital marketing has become extremely important in the business world to get and keep your name/brand out there. There are a few additional platforms I am looking into as well. Making sure your business is searchable on search engines, as most people are looking for specific industries in their local area.
