We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful May Cheree. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with May below.
May, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
As a sports mom myself, I created Mommie Athletics because I seen how many mom’s were there supporting their child(ren) from practice to games to sports events without taking the time she needed for herself. Yes, we all love being mom’s and supporting our children but Mommie Athletics is a brand designed to remind mom’s the importance of self-care.
Mommie Athletics is dedicated to uplifting the sports mom and letting her know the importance of the mom/child balance in life; helping mommies understand that it’s okay to fill her cup up first.
Mommie Athletics is building a community of sports mommies who understand the importance of balancing self-care and being the ultimate fan. No matter where you are in the world, we can relate to one another not only because of the sports lifestyle but because all we know is the love for ourselves and children.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As a dedicated sports mom, I had (have) a full schedule of work, running a business, and school (now graduated with my MBA), all while being a full-time mommy. My son has been playing basketball since he was 3 years old (now 15 years old) and I have very rarely missed a practice, game, or sports event. However, in hindsight, I realized that I lost myself trying to be the best mom I can be but there is only true way to be the best mom – filling my cup up first and letting it overflow into my son’s cup. Without me being at my full potential for myself and my son, it could have hindered his growth in the process; I may have been there physically to support but not mentally or emotionally because I was stressed and/or overwhelmed. My son deserved (and still deserves) a mom that should be at her full potential in all aspects of life – mentally, emotionally, and physically. Realizing that, I started to do things to help with my stress or being overwhelmed – meditating, journaling, reading more, and just taking some ME time! As mommies, we tend to forget about ourselves and the importance of self-care because we want our children to have it all first – which is totally understandable – however, what do we do for ourselves as mothers?
I created Mommie Athletics for an array of reasons and with the different products that I have available to mom’s all over the world, can help them through their self-care journey. Mommie Athletics was created to show moms that it’s okay to take care of herself and still be the ultimate fan because it is possible with BALANCE! To help mom’s with their journey of self-care, we carry things such as planners or journals for sports mom’s to plan their day/week/month/year or journals to write down their thoughts after a long day. We have candles and coffee/tea mugs to help sports mom’s relax after a long day of kids and sports. Mommie Athletics also carries customizable jewelry, clothing gear (tees with quotes), and water bottles to represent their child(ren) at the next sporting event.
The ultimate goal of Mommie Athletics is to build a community of modern day sports mom’s to help each other grow, maintain balance, and stay sane during our hectic sports schedules.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
As you guys know thus far in my journey, I am a dedicated mother. Having my baby at 18 years old, I did not want to be the stereotype to society. I was determined to finish college and work to provide for my child by any means necessary. When my son was a year old, he would stay with my mom (which was 30 minutes away from me) on my long days of work and school so that I can take care of business. This was usually one or two day(s) out of the week. One particular day of work and school, I was missing my child and decided to drive the 30 minutes to get to him, however, I fell asleep on the freeway and went off into an embankment. Thankfully, I was not severely injured.
After this incident, I realized that college (at least physically) was not an option but work was because I had to provide for my son. 4 years later, once he was a little older, I decided to go back to school to receive my Bachelors but I told myself (and family) that I would not stop until I receive my Master’s. Because of my hectic schedule and the scare of falling off the freeway, I did not want to take the chance of going to physical school so I enrolled in school online. Here I am, years later with my MBA (Master’s of Business Administration) and proud of the course that got me here. The main focus was to show my son that no matter what life throws at you, you may change the course but never the goal and education is always important!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think the biggest thing that helped my reputation in my market is being a dedicated sports mom and a woman who has her MBA. A lot of people like to see that you walk what you talk about and I can do just that. I created Mommie Athletics not for show but because I live this lifestyle and I know the struggle of what mom’s feel on a daily basis. In any way that I can help, I am happy to help; rather your child(ren) is in college playing sports and you been there, done that or you are a sports mom just getting started on your sports mom journey.
