We were lucky to catch up with May Be Fern recently and have shared our conversation below.
May Be Fern, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
We had an inspiring and eye-opening time creating our band’s debut EP, “Okay Grandma, Your Turn”, released in March of 2023. The process of collaborating to produce this body of work taught us about ourselves as artists, communicators, advocates, and friends. For each member of the band, the release of our first single off the album, “Maggie Jane”, marked our first time on Spotify. We are incredibly proud of the work that went into this project, and it left us energized for more.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
May Be Fern is a four-piece femme queer funk rock band based in Denver, Colorado. Kate Fern (vocals, bass), Hannah May (vocals, keys), Madi Spillman (lead guitar), and Carleen Jeffers (drums, vocals) came together in 2022 and became quickly aligned with a shared vision: to create a unique sound that transcends genre and expectation. The band’s style is a passionate and cohesive collaboration of each individual member’s diverse musical background, producing a sound that is greater than the sum of its parts. What sets us apart from other bands is our commitment to creating fully produced live music experiences, from the stage decorations, to the outfits we wear — everything is curated to fit May Be Fern’s vision. We are most proud of the safe and loving space created at our shows. All are welcome when May Be Fern is on stage. May Be Fern welcomes you to join us as we share our love with the world!

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
May Be Fern’s driving mission is to use our music to inspire, unite, and create a life for ourselves. We are working towards being able to support ourselves with our passion. May Be Fern hopes to one day have a “band house” where we will live and create together :)

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of what we do is getting to serve as representation for the identities that we hold. We are honored to have the ability to stand with a platform and show our community directly that there is space for them in the music scene, and that committing to chasing your dreams will yield results. We also are honored to have the ability to bring joy to our community in a way that they may not experience in other spaces.
