We were lucky to catch up with Maxx Nies recently and have shared our conversation below.
Maxx, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
When I first discovered Taylor Swift at the age of 7, I fell in love with her, her music, and herself as an artist. The way she wrote, performed, and created her art inspired me so much and still does to this day. I think I watched her perform once on tv and said that’s what I want to do for the rest of my life. After the passing of my great grandmother I wrote my first song and never stopped. My passion and determination has only grown stronger since then and I continue to shoot for the stars!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi! I’m Maxx Nies! I grew a love for singing, writing, and performing music around the age of 7. My dream was to grow up and be a “famous singer” but never really thought it would be anything more than a hobby. I rode horses most of my life and always saw myself having a career in the horse world until it stopped fulfilling me the way it used to. I had always kept my love for music but again it was always looked at as a hobby. I began writing and singing more after backing away from horseback riding and fell even more in love with working in music than I ever had. I decided I wanted to take it more seriously and began to write and perform more. I ended up going to Musicians Institute, a music school in LA for about a year until the pandemic hit. Once everything went online I started putting more focus on myself as an artist and started working with producers. Once I started writing songs with actual production aside from a few piano chords I couldn’t stop. Since 2018 I’ve been writing and performing original songs and love it more and more every time. In 2021 I was signed to Connection Music Publishing, a publishing company based in New York. I ended up moving from LA to New York to pursue my career there. I began working with my vocal coach Craig Derry and doing more live shows. I’m now based in New York building an amazing team and doing live shows about once a month. The majority of my music comes from difficult times and emotions I’ve gone through and go through including childhood abuse. I hope to connect with an audience that can relate to me as an artist and my music and find comfort and a friend in that so they feel less alone going through whatever they’re going through. I’d like my music to be an outlet for my listeners along with being a safe place where they feel understood, seen, and heard. As I’m performing around the city I’m also releasing music consistently! You can find me on all streaming platforms under Maxx Nies!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
As a child I dealt with a lot of abuse that I didn’t speak about until years after I was separated from my abusers. As time went on memories started resurfacing and had some health issues come up. After years of doctor appointments, tests, hospitals, tons of pain and suffering we had found some internal injuries due to the abuse I had experienced. For about two years I had felt like my body was giving up on me and thought I wasn’t going to make it. Yet I still held onto my passion for music. I continued to sing and write and get into the studio when I felt well enough. I never gave up on it because I knew I had a purpose and I knew once I came out of that dark time I was in I’d be able to share this experience and help others through my music.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Doing my favorite thing in the world and seeing it help others. Performing has always been one of my favorite things to do in the world so being able to perform my own songs and express the experience the song was or is for me is extremely rewarding. What make it even more special is when someone hears one of my songs and tells me it’s helped them in any kind of way or that they can relate. It’s so incredible to me that music can bring literally anyone together and heal people.
