Maxx, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Innovation comes in all shapes, sizes and across all industries, so we’d love to hear about something you’ve done that you feel was particularly innovative.
I believe one of the most impactful and innovative things I’ve done in my career is learn the business of the industries I wanted to be involved in early on. This set me up for the success and growth I am enjoying now and gave me the opportunity to learn how to take ownership of my brand and own my creative works and processes. This step alone opened up more doors and gave me more chances to leverage my name and knowledge. I’ve prided myself on being able to make a lot of my content by making sure my i’s are dotted and my t’s crossed. I’ve also taken it a step further by cutting out the middle man and being able to send my work directly from me to consumer using various outlets and relationships I’ve built over the years.
Maxx , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Maxx Calzz, and I’m a musician, digital creative, and CEO of a growing consulting firm that specialized in digital marketing and media.
I really started as an independent music artist working and collaborating with different people, creating a network of influencers and business owners, establishing relationships that helped me reach some small time success and fame. I decided to go to college at Media Tech Institute for Audio Visual Recording arts and Full Sail University for composition and business marketing. I figured this would not only give me a leg up by understanding the technical aspect of media creation but also the business side of the industry that I wanted to be in. Only after a couple things outside of my control started going awry, did I decided I would never be put in a vulnerable position again so I created my own publishing company and label, MMM (Maxx Motivation Media). I wanted to make sure if I was going to work in this music business that I would be protected and force myself to learn the business and know it so that I couldn’t be taken advantage of again. This led me to learning a lot more about the music industry and let to a lot of that success I mentioned earlier with me still receiving compensation and deals today for my artistic contributions and I’m grateful for that.
In 2018, An 18 wheeler accident on my way back from a celebration in my home town sidelined me for 8 months. My right leg was injured severely and my left foot was almost as bad. I was unable to stand on my own, let alone walk and was forced to sit down to recover. This meant no performing, no driving to promotions or studios, and the immense amount of pain kept me irritable and upset all the time. I was in a dark place. I was unable to do what I love after I had gotten it to a point where it was generating a sustainable revenue. I was devastated and honestly felt like my life was over. I was in a funk for a long time and didn’t feel like anything could bring me out of it. I had medical bills, regular bills, and I was only receiving small time royalties from my creations as I had not made it as big as I’d hope and the single I was hoping would take off would have to be shelved until I could at least get back on my feet. I was being forced to pivot.
In 2019 in march, while in physical therapy learning to walk again, I was just sitting still. I decided to help a few friends and colleagues start and market their businesses using personalized plans that i had created specifically for them. This led to their major mutual success in in the legal, health, and technology industries. These gave me the confidence I needed to take the next step. I would use my network that I established to help others monetize their ideas and hobbies into true businesses. It was a breath of fresh air, for the first time in a long time I felt great. I felt rejuvenated, the best I had felt in a long time. I began to reach out to more and more colleagues, even some strangers and offer my services. The results of my efforts were amazing. I was literally able to use my mind and experience to help my colleagues excel and i was getting paid to do it.
After about 7 months of working with my colleagues, my biggest break to solidify my thought process that this is what I’m supposed to be doing came from partnerships with the streaming video service, Twitch and the meal delivery company, Hello Fresh. These two nods in the midst of a pandemic were more than enough to catapult my business into second gear and force me to make it a reality. I could no longer be worried about being stuck at home sitting on the couch, I found myself saturated in work that was rewarding, and providing me motivation to get back to my best self. What seem like just regular moments in the start of a new business were essentially giving me new life. These opened up the confidence in me I needed to move forward and reach out to more individual & corporate clients. I’m proud to say that those relationships are still very healthy and continuing to grow tremendously.
My main thing I’m most proud of is motivating myself to not giving up in my time of tribulation because there were several times I wanted to cave in. The second thing is being able to service our clients with personalized creative plans to thrive, it’s also what sets us apart. We don’t just give you a cookie cutter pre made plan. We sit with our clients, learn their wants and needs and then cultivate a creative plan for you to take pre action, continue to reach goals, or push yourself to take the next evolutionary step in your business.
I want my clients to know that we are here to help, provide motivation and even creative inspiration and if we can’t help you, or we aren’t for you thats ok too. While we understand our goal is to create revenue, we also want to make sure we are the right fit for your needs. That is what has kept us going and thats how we do business. It’s what we believe to be the best way.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think what helped build our reputation in the market is just doing what we say we are going to do, and completing the work. In this day and age a lot of people talk about what they will, and can do. We do it and we do it well. When you do it well, words gets around that you do good business. That with effective marketing is what you need to get your name out there. My advice to new business owners, keep your word and do good business.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to learn is don’t expect to find yourself in everyone. A lot of times we look at others actions in the light of what we would have done or the way that we would have handled the situation. We can’t look at things this way. It will only hurt you or leave you disappointed in the end. I learned this lesson by being upset for along time because i didn’t feel like I was receiving the support I should receive in the wake of my injury because it was not the way I would have handled the situation. This is a lesson i apply in business and personal life going forward. Do what you would need to do. Anything any one else does is extra. You are responsible for your life.
