We recently connected with Maxwell David Marcus and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Maxwell David, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I’ve been blessed recently with opportunities to work alongside some wonderful teams that have each changed my life for the better. It’s not an exaggeration that the experience on set of a film or television production for me feels like home, in a manner distinct from any other endeavor I’ve encountered in life. Each time I return to the creative space of a new story; I forge a family with the team members that I’m in collaboration with; and each group is unlike any other amalgamation of individuals I’ve ever met. The personalities of the artists that make up the crews and casts meld together and create a beautiful symphony only experienced by those there in the room. Each person working together towards a unified vision just awakens my soul in a way I can only just be intensely grateful for and humbled by. I hope to experience it in many new ways for new stories, with new (and old) faces; again and again.
I’ve had the intense pleasure of playing the lead role of Isaac Clarke in a “Dead Space” Fan Film; which was so very energizing. The production of this short film exceeded that of any Fan film I have been a part of; and it was particularly special to the inner child in me. The team operated smoothly from its direction, to the cinematography, the camera team, the lighting team, the set designers, sound design, production, and performances, even makeup, effects, and more; it was lightning in a bottle and it was hard, fun work.
Prior to that film, I had a spectacular experience as the episode Lead on an undisclosed TV Western; where I had the opportunity to connect with some really wonderful artists and horses, whom I got to take on high stakes action sequences alongside.
The character I took on is a real and celebrated individual; so I had big shoes to fill on set. It was a great experience that allowed me to step into a role of leadership both on and off-screen; which to me starts at being a good listener. I’ve had such wonderful journeys in the lead roles I’ve taken on in my previous Independent feature films, that it was quite exciting to take this next step. On set, we just had such a supportive cast and crew that the work and the scenes flowed seamlessly; even the large-scale battles on horseback! The stories of the characters in the episode and how their real lives bled into the script was truly impactful to me as a person, we even filmed on my birthday; so my celebration this year was doing that project! The whole production was deeply nourishing to my soul.
I’m also very grateful for the run that a film I took part in titled ‘Reveille’ has had recently. The worldwide release dropped on YouTube a few months ago and it already has over a million views; which is new for me. I actually received some of my first fan mail messages and that was really lovely. I thoroughly enjoy being asked about my process, and I love hearing people’s perspectives on the work our team has put together. The dramatic anti-war story has been received very well and the European Parliament wrote a formal recommendation for it. A rare honor which our team is very proud of.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Maxwell David Marcus (as you may know by this point) and I have been a performer my entire life; a child actor (much to the chagrin of my elementary school teachers); a Professional Wrestler starting at age fifteen, and for the past five years: I’ve been making my way as a screen Actor. I pride myself on commitment, preparation, collaboration, and nourishing a story by mining the details hidden within its script.
I’m all about commitment. Whether it’s striking, grappling, riding, shooting, falling, feeling, fighting, or speaking, I pour my energy into alchemizing a new dimension of myself for each performance. I love storytelling and the screen has always held a place near and dear to my heart; films and TV series showed me key pieces of who I wanted to be in the world and in my own life. I grew up admiring characters who forged a path for themselves; imbued with a set of principles and good intentions. It’s stories that have often inspired me to shine the light in my own life and follow this dream every day.
Following the six years I spent pursuing my career as a Professional Wrestler, I have adapted my love for hand-to-hand combat into my craft of Acting and I’m constantly training to be a more evolved action actor, martial artist, athlete, & teammate in life.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
At the core of my creative journey is the goal to shine a light in places of darkness. I hope to inspire people and myself included to live boldly and with integrity. My mission is to encourage anyone and everyone to take the reins of the story in their own life; and live it with open arms and an open heart; with love and care for all life. This human experience can be a lot; but it is a gift. The grace in the madness I believe: is often found in the beauties of adventure, connection, miracles, service, solitude, gratitude, and kindness.
Many of the stories that I most like to explore in my art on screen are ones of hope, grit, determination, love, care, courage, wit, solidarity, and faith, because in life; these are themes that have brought the rainbow in the rain on my cloudiest days.
To quote my favorite film of all time: “Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things and no good thing ever dies”. (Shawshank Redemption).
I want people to look at my work and be reminded that they are loved and worthy of love, great and magnificent, powerful and divine. Most importantly I want my work to show how to wield your power in a way that lifts ourselves and others up to new heights simultaneously. I hope that through the stories I tell I can plant some seeds to evolve our collective consciousness towards a place of empathy and heightened awareness; even bring people together.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I recently competed in my first paid boxing matchup! By happenstance of sparring in prep I suffered a rib injury just days prior to the show and I actually considered forfeiting the match; but I did not want to give up on myself, my friends, or my opponent. I knew my heart, my wit, and my determination could carry me through the match. This was an experience I not only wanted to partake in, but one which I had made a commitment to; and raised money & support for. Plus we had the former world undisputed champion of Zab Judah as the celebrity referee; so I couldn’t let him down!
I went into that match with my heart full of faith and my body left with inspiration. I believe in the greater story at hand.
I ended up having a spectacular experience and I’m very proud of having stepped into a new arena after such a short and rigorous preparation period. Each chapter of my story is a gift earned from those little leaps of faith in my abilities and resilience.
