We were lucky to catch up with Maxwell Christen recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Maxwell, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Big Mouth Marketing was really a community effort! What I mean by that is I asked everyone – my friends, my family, small business owners, corporate owners, and more – anyone who could give me advice towards my goal of helping restaurants. I think anyone who just starts a business hasn’t thought about it enough – everyone has a perspective or direction that could help your business, and it is what you do with that advice that makes a difference.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Of course! So I started Big Mouth Marketing here in Salt Lake City, which is a marketing agency specifically designed for restaurants, bars, and other culinary businesses – at the beginning, it was prepared for the worst hoping for the best situation, but it ended up being the best thing I have ever worked on! Now Big Mouth helps 20+ restaurants with their marketing and supports the community each culinary business serves – it is my passion and it is what I love to do!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Absolutely! I think most restauranters feel they need to hit 10k followers to build their audience, when in reality, having a smaller more targeted audience makes such a difference – with one client we focused on the neighborhood and ran targeted “STOP BY AND SAY HI” ads. It performed really well and made an impact on their business.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Boy do I have a hundred resources! Youtube is a huge resource for new marketing skills and best practices – someone is teaching it for free and you can take it? WHY NOT! Also, Contagious is a great book and Hacking Growth is an excellent book for taking notes in. Lastly, budget Clarity.FM into your business – you have an opportunity to talk with real professionals who are doing it well and it is extremely helpful.
