We recently connected with Maxine Morency and have shared our conversation below.
Maxine, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So, let’s start with a hypothetical – what would you change about the educational system?
There is a lot that I would change about the educational system, primarily changing the teach to test focus that only cares about standardized test results and having data that compares considerably impressive to other nearby school districts. To better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career, students need to learn essential life skills that can teach them how to be a responsible adult. School curriculum should have more of a focus on entrepreneurship, business skills, how to properly file taxes, and financial literacy.
Maxine, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a podcaster. I am the host of my own podcast called, God Built This Podcast. I got into this industry of podcasting because I am a truth teller and I like telling the truth about topics that may not always be discussed casually. I think oftentimes we sweep certain topics under the rug and fail to have authentic discussions. I started my own podcast because I like to have authentic discussions.
What I offer people is the courage to be honest. Because of my consistent transparency on my podcast, I often receive feedback from my listeners saying that they can relate wholeheartedly to what I shared and feel seen because they recognize they are not alone. That is what I want my listeners to take away from my podcast. I want them to feel encouraged to stand in their truth and not apologize for it. I want them to be confident in their flaws, in their decisions, and to be okay if they make mistakes.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is when people connect with my work. My podcast is my labor of love. Every episode I record, I share a piece of me and it can be emotionally exhausting. So when my listeners connect with any of my episodes and share with me their related experiences, it is incredibly rewarding and makes it all worth it.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn the idea of being a “good girl.”
Growing up in a Christian and immigrant household, I was put under pressure to present a “good girl” image in which I could not feel authentic feelings; I could not be angry, sad, frustrated etc instead I should always feel happy and should always wear a smile on my face even when I do not feel happy.
Breaking away from this idea and pressure of being a “good girl” gave me the courage to be comfortable in myself and learning more of who I am, what I like/dislike, and what I want.
