We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Maximillian Aguiar a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Maximillian , appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Our newest film Hairy has been our most meaningful project so far. After the success of our previous film VENEER my creative partner Logan Diemert and I knew that our next film had to be our best yet. We had the equipment, a vague idea and a shoot date for 10 days in September. What we didn’t have was a script. With the shoot date a little over two months away we buckled down like never before. I began writing and as I was writing I would send the pages to Logan so he could secure shooting locations for the scenes, I would also send pages to actors to see if they were interested in playing characters I hadn’t even finished writing yet. It was a very intense process and I know for a fact neither of us had ever worked that hard. However because of this we were really able to appreciate just how lucky we were to have such an amazing group of talented and willing people around us.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Maximillian Aguiar and my creative partner Logan Diemert and I have been making independent feature films in Colorado since 2019.
We met while attending Western State University and honed our videography skills and senses of humor making short skits and videos throughout college, we even wrote a few short stage plays that were performed throughout our four years there. Being a small school in a smaller town was perfect for us as no one seemed to care about two guys roaming the streets at all hours of the night with video cameras.
Our feature films The Doors Between US (2019), VENEER (2020) and Hairy (2022) have screened at over 40 film festivals all around the world.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Just to make stuff that hasn’t been made before, we HATE safe cookie cutter films and trailers that give away the whole movie. We strive to push ourselves to not take the easy way out and make content that is unique to the brand we have built over the years.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
The War of Art is probably the best book ever written about the creative process. Do yourself a favor and buy it.
