Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Max Weisman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Max, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the best thing you’ve ever seen (or done yourself) to show a client that you appreciate them?
As a media trainer and brander (of individuals and companies) building trust and relationships is important to the business model. By offering free feedback before or after a major interview/speech/press conference/etc., I can show clients that it’s less about the money and more about building them up to a level that we can both be proud of. In addition to training and offering the skills of working with media or public speaking, Halom Strategies builds up confidence and reputation. Building confidence takes more work (and trust!) on both ends than the actual skill building.
Max, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As After 10 years of working on politicians campaigns, as a communications consultant, as a government communications professional, and sitting on several boards in the communications role, I proudly started Halom Strategies. Halom, the Hebrew word for “dream,” is based off of the idea that you should present how you want others to see you – but sometimes that requires training and branding. I am proud to help people develop the skills, self-awareness, and confidence to publicly speak about themselves and their passions. I always get most excited when a former client sends me a news clip or speech that uses the skills we’ve worked through together.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I was always taught to shoot for a regular retainer and always charge whenever possible. I have found in my personal experience that clients find my rates to be lower and more accessible. I’ve also found that clients appreciate that I don’t nickel-and-dime for every piece of advice. By building a relationship rather than an à la carte bill, I can show clients that I genuinely care about them and their success. They are more likely to come back and recommend me to an industry peer.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
As a communications professional, my network is aware of the people I work for and causes I support. Through Halom Strategies, I use 100% confidentiality with my clients. So a client can hire me, assured that no one needs to know they’ve sought my services, but can see my previous and current work across traditional and digital media. This shows clients that their work will be respected and safe but they’re also assured that I’m a professional and expert in my craft.
