We were lucky to catch up with Max MacVeety recently and have shared our conversation below.
Max, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I started out learning fundamentals from other producers and beat makers. In the past few years, a bulk of what I’ve learned is just from producing singers and also producing/mixing my own instrumental music.
I could have sped up my learning process if I had believed in myself as a producer and focused more on production earlier in my career.
The skills that have been most essential are keeping an open mind, being humble, and constantly learning.
In the past, my biggest obstacle for learning production more was time. I was touring a lot as a drummer and wasn’t putting enough time into the studio and production.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started out making Hip-Hop beats on an MPC-2000 when I joined Crown City Rockers. (A live Hip-Hop band from Oakland, Ca) Since then I’ve produced, mixed, and played drums on many albums, EPs, and singles. Most notably as a drummer I’ve played on tracks for Brother Ali, Zion-I, Lyrics Born, and “Three Kings” by Jake-One with Jay-Z, Rick Ross, and Dr. Dre.
I love collaborating with singers or rappers. I produce tracks from scratch or help with finishing existing tracks. Usually with singers, we’ll start with a topic and feel. I’m able to get other musicians to play and come up with ideas. I then edit/arrange/mix and work with the artist to see their vision through.
Everyone I work with I believe in wholeheartedly and I will do everything in my power to realize their vision.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I get to do my favorite thing every day and make a living doing it!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
It’s a life-long goal of getting better at my craft and helping other artists/creatives realize their vision.
