We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Max Bockoven a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Max, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success is a multifaceted concept that can vary greatly from person to person, as it is highly subjective. However, there are some common principles and attributes that often contribute to achieving success in various areas of life. Here are some key factors that are often associated with success, along with a few anecdotes to illustrate these points:
Clear Goals and Vision: Success often begins with a clear understanding of what you want to achieve. Setting specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals can provide direction and motivation. For example, think of a student who sets a goal to graduate with honors and maps out a plan to achieve it.
Hard Work and Dedication: Success usually requires a strong work ethic and a willingness to put in the effort. The story of Thomas Edison’s numerous attempts to invent the light bulb exemplifies the perseverance and dedication often necessary to overcome obstacles on the path to success.
Continuous Learning and Adaptation: Success is often closely linked to the ability to learn from mistakes, adapt to changing circumstances, and keep acquiring new knowledge and skills. The evolution of companies like Apple, which started in a garage and transformed into a tech giant, demonstrates the importance of adaptability and innovation.
It’s important to note that success is a deeply personal concept, and what it means to one person may differ from another. While these factors can contribute to success, the specific combination and emphasis on each will vary based on individual circumstances and goals. Ultimately, success should align with one’s values and bring a sense of fulfillment and purpose.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My work, whether it’s through Ope Collective or solo shows as Bockoven, stems from my passion of music. Music has a remarkable way of resonating with people on a deep emotional level. Providing comfort, inspiration, and solace. It’s a universal language that transcends boundaries and connects individuals from diverse backgrounds. Many people find that these frequencies are a constant companion throughout their lives, offering support during both festive and challenging times.
Working in the music industry and experiencing the energy of a live crowd is priceless. Creating house events that allows people to let go, forget about their problems and immerse themselves cannot be traded or purchased. Ope Collective keeps these events fresh through changing venues monthly, adding new decor and keeping a constant rotation of residents.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Interacting with your fans is a fundamental aspect of maintaining any entertaining profession. Building and nurturing relationships with your crowd that listens to you can lead to long-term loyalty, positive word-of-mouth referrals, and a thriving reputation.
1. Treat your fans as individuals. Remember their names, what artists they are listening to, and past interactions, if applicable. Personalizing your interactions shows that you value them as unique customers.
2. Maintain consistency in the quality. Fans appreciate knowing what to expect and can become loyal when they consistently receive the best of you. Pay attention to what they are dancing to, what they are wearing and how they express themselves at your events. Repeat what works and throw away the negatives.
3. Thankfulness and Appreciation: Express gratitude to your fans for making their way to your show. On the dance floor, we are equals. A simple thank you for coming or saying “enjoy the show” can go a long way
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Facing rejection, especially from your favorite record labels, can be a challenging and disheartening experience in the music industry. However, it’s important to remember that rejection is a common part of the creative process, and many successful artists, producers, and DJs have faced setbacks before achieving their goals. Learn from rejection, use it chance to grow. The journey of a music producer and DJ often involves facing obstacles and setbacks. It’s your resilience, dedication, and passion for music that will help you persevere and continue to progress in your career. Remember that success can take time, but with perseverance and continuous improvement, you can achieve your goals and find the recognition you seek.
