We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Maverick Turner a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Maverick, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I began learning audio on my own at 13 years old. I use to spend hours searching the internet, downloading software and reading pdf books trying to find out anything that I could about what it takes to become a great engineer.
You have to understand that the internet was very slow then and it took hours to download one plugin. I’m sure if I had wifi as a child could have possibly cut down 10 years off of my learning experience.
But I found those times to be the most rewarding because I learned a lot about myself and the essential thing that you can have as an artist “Self-awareness”.

Maverick, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well, for those who may not know me, my name is Maverick “Baby T” Turner and I am A 2x Emmy Award winning audio mixing engineer.
Baby T is a stage name that was given to me by old friends when we started doing music at 15 or 16. We loved the HOT BOYZ back then and everyone had a name just like them except me.
Everyone thought BABY from CASH MONEY made all the beats (that’s what I did back then) so they called me BABY T, with the T standing for the middle initial in name. What’s funny is I don’t think I’ve publicly told that story to anyone, because I always thought it was super silly, but that’s how I got my name.
My career as a recording artist and audio engineer spans over two decades and specializes in Recording, Mixing, Mastering and Audio Restoration. I currently own and operate TYLER KAYDEN MUSIC GROUP, LLC and STUDIO 1524 where we have landed production placement(s) on shows such as; “American Idol, Fox Sports & Keeping Up With The Kardashians.
These days I am a freelance broadcast mixing engineer for client(s) such as; BIG TEN NETWORK, FOX SPORTS, CHICAGO CUBS, and ESPN. I have been in television for about 5 years now and I must say nothing beats working in sports.
Over the years I’ve been blessed enough to not only do what I love for a living, but travel the world while doing it. I am a travel junkie who is addicted to hip-hop,
I like to think that I am a product of hard work and sacrifice and without hip-hop I wouldn’t be who I am today. or where I am today.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is the freedom to be myself. The freedom to be who I am unapologetically and knowing that there are others out there just like me who likes to express their hurt, anger, pain and success through art.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I believe NFT’s could be something great for the future as more information comes out about them. The idea of being able to purchase something special from your favorite artist that’s only for you is pretty cool.
