We were lucky to catch up with Maverick James recently and have shared our conversation below.
Maverick, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
When I was younger (maybe around 14 or 15) I started writing some songs based off certain popular music that’s been known for years now, inspired me to make my own music. The songs I made back then was kinda weak to be honest with you but it was new for me and I liked what I was doing at the time.
The progress started going a bit further when some people who listened to my music gave me a negative feedback and it affected me both ways. I honestly felt devastated when I started thinking like I wanted to give up on music or just feeling like nobody’s gonna take me seriously as an Artist. I didn’t want to be known as just a rapper. The other part of me felt like I still have an opportunity to keep going with my music so I continued to pursue it.
To me, it’s feels like you have to go through a lot of phases to get where you’re trying to go with your music. Of course, You want to get it out there and be heard.
I started to learn on how to use my voice a lot more because back when I was going through the process of my first few songs, my voice was ok but it definitely needed to be developed. The way how I was rapping, it sounded awful because I wasn’t very good at enunciating my words so of course I had to build a skill on that too.
I feel like writing is more essential than anything because you are the creator of your music (even in general). The lyrics have to mean something to each song that you’re talking about but how would you put the pieces together in order to make a masterpiece?
Thoughts like that actually pushed me to become creative as an Artist.
Knowing what I know now is actually investing in myself, which is a big deal professionally and personally for me. You have to be prepared to accept the challenges that comes your way and expect the unexpected. As long as you stay committed to what you enjoy doing constantly, you will be good in the long run and know what you’re doing every step of the way. Another part that’s definitely important is to free your mind and validate yourself before anything or anybody else. Know what’s good and what’s not good for you.
Trust and Believe in yourself and the process.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I basically started off by having my own studio. I only went to like 2 studios with some people when I started making music. The studio is at my house so it wasn’t really a real studio but I made something out of nothing. I had my laptop, a mic, a speaker and a program to record on. I learned how to mix from my big brother. He used to engineer for me and his songs. That’s how I really started making music because of him but also just to see where I was going with it.
I think what sets me apart from other is that I’m versatile at my own pace and I know what to do with whatever I got in mind when it comes to my recording sessions. There are times where some sessions are very stressful because this probably not how I want my song to sound or I messed up my flow, my vocals sounds a mess, etc but I always manage to take my time and come up with anything that will best fit the record. It even be that 1 song you wait on for months to at least a year or 2 because you think that record would sound special out of all the songs you created but then again, you don’t know what type of energy you gonna put out into that record. I find that fascinating about myself the way how I put stuff together into a record and it definitely encouraged me to make more.
I’m proud of my work ethic because I see that it’s improving the more I do music.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Yes. I feel like my mission or goal is to inspire and motivate people that’s around me and to those who are watching and listening to me. I want to be able to change the world. I feel like I have that type of sound that the world would want to hear. But other than that, I feel like we need more empathy in this world.
Like for example, I’m not saying that you supposed to feel sorry for that person but hear what that person have to say and see where that person is coming from because at the end of the day, nobody’s perfect. I’m just saying that we all need to learn how to be more supportive of each other.
I feel like my music have something that people can relate to and it got some positive vibes. Music is everything to me to the point where it inspired me to create my own to influence others.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I started to create a content by recording songs and releasing them. Sharing it to my friends, family and supporters. I promoted my music on all my platforms. Having connections with producers, promoters and other artists. Putting out videos and just doing more promotions. You just got to put yourself out there and give it your all depending on how bad you want it.
