We were lucky to catch up with Maurya Cockrell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Maurya, thanks for joining us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I hope to build a legacy that permeates generations, one that supports and celebrates those who are often overlooked. Through my work and words, I strive to help others find alignment, better their communities, and transition with peace. When I’m gone, I hope to be remembered as dependable, creative, and loving. I want to be someone who inspired others to live authentically and intentionally.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a serial side hustler, driven by a passion for balancing intrapreneurial and entrepreneurial endeavors. My journey began in 2015 with the launch of YKNOT Consulting, and our 10-year anniversary is coming up soon. YKNOT was my introduction to career coaching and intergenerational strategy consulting. While my focus has shifted over the years, I still work with a small clientele through Reject Relief Services, offering private, tailored job application support. I also consult with companies seeking to develop multigenerational employee resource groups, helping them foster inclusion and collaboration across age groups.
As an SDoH Solutionary®, I view my projects as interconnected efforts to address the social and systemic factors that shape well-being. My main focuses now are Side Hustle Honors® and the Side Hustler Alliance. As the Head of Hustle, I lead the development and execution of our annual awards show, now going into its seventh year, celebrating individuals like me who balance intrapreneurial roles while pursuing entrepreneurial dreams. Through the Side Hustler Alliance, where I serve as Board President, we focus on supporting side hustlers and entrepreneurs at every life stage. Our mission is to nurture the often-overlooked psychosocial aspects of entrepreneurship. Sustained success is not just about technical skills. It is about building connections, fostering resilience, and supporting personal growth.
I also lead Leaves Speak® Healthcare, where I combine research and practical application to address under-supported needs. I have been blessed to publish research on elderspeak, which has taken me across the globe. Through educational presentations, I help organizations improve team dynamics and cultural awareness. Leaves Speak also offers death doula support, guiding individuals and families through life’s toughest transitions with dignity and compassion.
What sets me apart is the combination of my unique professional experience, educational background, and genuine interest in helping others find peace and fulfillment. My approach is always rooted in care, curiosity, and a desire to make meaningful connections.
I am most proud of approaching my 10-year business anniversary. The journey has not always been easy. I have made countless mistakes and wanted to quit more times than I can count, but I am still here, learning, growing, and striving to get better every day.
To potential collaborators and clients, I want you to know I would love to connect. Whether it is improving your personal world or impacting our community at large, I am excited to see how we can work together to create something meaningful.

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
Actually, I turned my side hustle into a full-time business by way of a gap year from corporate. With Leaves Speak Healthcare, my research, especially on elderspeak, took me across the globe. At the time, I made the leap not for financial rewards but for the experience. I didn’t have the flexibility in my corporate role to travel for speaking engagements or participate in fellowships that were essential for growing my brand.
During that time, I presented at an international conference and participated in an innovation fellowship, which were pivotal in expanding my network and refining my vision. To sustain myself financially, I took on gig work as a contracted Director, developed curriculum, and worked as an adjunct. These roles not only supported me but also deepened my skills and perspective, enhancing the work I do today.
That gap year gave me the time and space to focus 100% on entrepreneurship, and it was truly worth the financial sacrifices. While I eventually transitioned back into side hustleship, the milestones achieved and lessons learned during that period have been invaluable. Taking that leap was a reminder that sometimes you need to pause, step out of your comfort zone, and invest in yourself fully to create opportunities for long-term success.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best sources of new clients for me have been LinkedIn and word of mouth. I really value when people share their experiences working with me with others, as word of mouth feels personal and affirming. It is always rewarding to know that my work has made an impact and inspired someone to recommend me to their network.
I also enjoy connecting with decision-makers on LinkedIn, where I often find consulting opportunities. LinkedIn allows me to showcase my expertise, build meaningful professional relationships, and engage with organizations aligned with my values. These connections have been instrumental in growing my client base and expanding the reach of my work.
