We were lucky to catch up with Maurico recently and have shared our conversation below.
Maurico, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
One of the most meaningful projects I’ve worked on is my forthcoming album, ‘Greater.’ This album, almost two years in the making, is a body of work born out of some of the toughest challenges I’ve faced—financial, mental, and spiritual struggles all collided during this time. My music has always aimed to uplift and motivate others, and creating this album while grappling with my own battles was no easy feat. I found myself crafting songs to inspire my audience while simultaneously seeking solace and strength in them for myself, navigating obstacles in real-time.
This project holds a special place in my heart for many reasons. Every Maurico supporter understands my deep connection to music and its transformative power. From the moment I discovered music, it became my beacon of hope, a wellspring of motivation, and a source of empowerment and entertainment. Music, in its purest form, has a profound ability to enhance our lives. From that initial moment, I knew I wanted to create art that could offer these same life-changing benefits to everyone who listened.
People often describe me as an optimist. Despite life’s challenges, I genuinely believe that we can lead abundant lives if we are willing to work for it. Growing up in the toughest neighborhoods, in a single-parent household with few role models of success, it was hard to believe in a bright future. Many might feel that success, abundance, and fulfillment are unattainable or undeserved. I too had my doubts until I found God and realized that through Him, all things are possible.
The ‘Greater’ album is for those who believe there is more to life than their current circumstances.
Reflecting on my journey, I’ve overcome the adversities of my upbringing and achieved more than I ever imagined. Yet, I still believe the best is yet to come. I know God has greater plans for me.
Moving forward, my mission is to be a beacon of hope for those seeking a better life. I want people to know that if I could turn my life around completely, so can they. I aim to share the tools and insights that helped me become who I am today. Witnessing others grow into their greatness, especially when they doubted it was possible, brings me immense joy and fulfillment. These are the moments I live for—seeing others experience GREATER.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
For those who don’t know me, I’m Maurico—a passionate artist, driven entrepreneur, and devoted believer. I founded and lead the ‘BETTER MUSIC BETTER LIFE’ brand. With over 20 years as a musician and more than a decade as a business owner, my journey has been rich and diverse. One of my early milestones was signing my first independent record deal with Tennessee Recording Company , a label owned by Kyle Cook of Matchbox Twenty. I’ve had the honor of collaborating with 3-time Grammy-winning producer Shannon Sanders, and in addition to performing my own music, I write and produce for other artists as well.
I’ve penned over 30 songs for alternative rock artist Matthew ‘Mysilentbravery’ Schwackman some of which have been placed on ESPN and sports center. In addition I’ve worked on numerous singles with rising R&B artist Shayn, who is currently collaborating with multi-Grammy-winning producer Aaron Pierce.
At Better Music Better Life, we’re committed to delivering high-quality, uplifting music along with lifestyle-enhancing products, services, and apparel. Our mission is to equip you with the essentials needed to help you become the best version of yourself.
What sets us apart is our purpose-driven approach. We offer more than just entertainment; we provide education, empowerment, and the tools to transform your life. That’s what we’re most proud of.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
As you might know, I’m not just a music artist—I’m also an entrepreneur. Before I ventured into business ownership, I spent about 15 years in fast food management, starting at the age of 15. My early introduction to hard work has shaped who I am today. My experience in fast food taught me the ins and outs of running a business.
When I got signed as a recording artist, I was still working as a manager at Krystal’s, hesitant to leave a stable job. I knew the only way to give my music the full attention it needed was to let go of my management role. It took faith and a lot of prayer, but I made the leap. Looking back, I’m glad I took that educated risk to pursue my dreams.
I’ve learned that taking smart leaps of faith is crucial. Don’t let anyone tell you to just jump blindly. Jumping without a solid plan can land you at the bottom and potentially crush your dreams and goals altogether.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
A huge part of being an entrepreneur is the relentless pursuit of growth and learning. Self-development is essential for becoming the best version of yourself. The most important book I’ve read—and continue to read—is the Bible. It provides the fundamental principles and foundations for life, covering all aspects of existence. It’s perfect for understanding who you are, who created you, and what you were created for. Most of my qualities and character as a man were shaped by the teachings of the Bible.
For financial literacy, I turned to ‘The Automatic Millionaire’ by David Bach. Growing up in an environment where financial struggles were constant, I saw how money issues could strain every aspect of life. As I grew older, my goal was to learn how to manage my finances—a skill neither my upbringing nor the school system taught me. This book changed my life tremendously. By applying its principles, I was able to save and eventually buy my first house. Before making that purchase, I read another of Bach’s books, ‘The Automatic Millionaire: Homeowner,’ which guided me step-by-step through the process of buying a home. These books set my life on an upward trajectory.
Reading is a a huge part of success. If you don’t like to read physical books, try the audio versions—that’s what I did. I would listen to them while driving, working out, and even while working. It’s an efficient way to absorb knowledge and keep improving.
