Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mauricio Murillo. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Mauricio, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
My “NANA” series features portraits of my 90-year-old grandmother. This project means a lot to me. First of all, I started this series because ever since my grandfather passed away I noticed she would have days where she felt depressed and lonely. I thought it could be fun to have her play dress up and let me take some fun portraits of her. This was able to keep her mind off things and spend more time with her grandson. She has always been my number 1 fan. What neither of us expected was how well received the series would be. Her portraits have been published in books, magazines and billboards. She gets a kick out of it when family members reach out to her saying how much they love the photos. my favorite thing is that I get to create these amazing memories with her that I can always look back on.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
In the end, I think they are really great for the artist. We are still in the early stages of trying to think about what we can do with them. I have seen some photography friends of mine do very well with them. Seeing artists make more money with NFTs than their prints is really amazing. I have also been able to see projects happen where the money helps fund a photographer’s next series or project. That is exciting because there are only so many grants out there and to be able to use NFTs in this manner is the future for funding new ideas and projects.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Photography has allowed me to interact with so many different people that I could have never met in any other situation. I have had the pleasure to have some deep conversations about people’s lives and I feel grateful to be there to listen and learn from so many perspectives.
