We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Maurice Smith a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Maurice , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I was always artistic. I came from an artistic family on both sides. But being from such a small community where the only artists to really make it out were blues musicians or gospel musicians. It was a really close friend of mine name Michael Burton who has toured the world with some of the best on the industry that pushed me and told me as a R&B artist, I could make it
Maurice , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I always aspired to sing but I never thought it would be a career that I’d actually have. I moved to California with a friend of mine that I was recording with in Mississippi but only after I was told that a job I didn’t get in Mississippi had a position in California and if I found my way out there, it was mine. Then the economy took a turn for the worse. So instead of pursing another corporate job, I dove head first into the music industry
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is successfully tapping into a crowd and having everyone move in sync
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
There is no particular mission other than I love being able to express myself through music
