We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Maurice Houston a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Maurice , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
It was shortly after the transition of my mother. She was/is a big inspiration of me striving for my goals whether it was in school or navigating my way through life. That’s my girl I just know she looking down smiling at the fact that I’m operating out of my purpose and doing something that I love.

Maurice , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into music in early 2007. Started with doing live sound for my church where I controlled the sound board and all the eq. I did that for about 2 maybe 3 years and after 2012 I was introduced to a guy named Marqus Curtis who allowed me to be a service to his studio that he had at the time where I was learning to engineer and mix songs. As I grew in that area I made some life long connections and friends also. Being there for the time I was there showed me if I stick with it and discipline myself to learning more about my craft my peak was and is limitless as long as I stick to it and do the work. I provide a multitude of services from beat making, producing, engineering and mixing to writing and help setting the mood. I always start with the question “how can I serve you today and how are you feeling”? The reason for that is I know a lot of times things may get in the way of the recording process because life you know? So to get passed that we’ll work on something that will help get those emotions out. I can say i am most proud of the outcome to see their face and tone of voice from being satisfied with the work and helped bring their idea to life.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I’m a firm believer in using all resources you have to help get you to where you need to be in your job, life, relationships etc. One of the 1st books I’ve read that started me out on just gaining an understanding of life was a book called “Living on Purpose” by Dr. Vincent Robinson. Other books that I’ve read that impacted my life in a similar way are “The Outliers” by Malcolm Gladwell, and “Bushido The Way of the Samurai” by Tsunetomo Yamamoto.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect for me is with any accomplishment I view them as championships. Every goal met, every interview, no matter small or big these championships allow me to showcase who I do it for and for 1. My mother. 2. My playa potna Keon Burroughs. May they rest well.
