We were lucky to catch up with Maurice F Martin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Maurice F, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
The moment that shifted the trajectory of my career was indeed one of the events that shifted the trajectory of my life. I woke up one morning thinking it would be an ordinary day. I logged onto my Facebook account and I had the worst experience a person can have. A message in my inbox that my brother had died. I’m not sure if I’ve ever shared that before, but I found out the worst news of my life on Facebook. This was the loss of my second brother in two years. Erwin and I were close and it rocked my life in a way that forever changed me.
My brother’s death gave me more of a reason to figure out how to really live. I had felt pretty lost for years as to my career and my direction as a whole. Erwin dying was a catalyst to find my life purpose and begin really living again.
Once I started moving in that direction, I realized that my life purpose was helping other people live really fulfilling lives. I know what it is to go through the motions and be a part of “the walking dead.” Now I feel driven to help people find meaning and purpose in life and to confront the things that have been keeping them stuck.
I have learned that life is short, precious, and not promised. I think the greatest thing we can do is to help one another cherish the gift of life that we have been given.
Maurice F, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As a spiritual life coach, my work is focused on helping people achieve greater levels of fulfillment, purpose, and meaning in their lives. Oftentimes, I work with entrepreneurs, educators, and spiritual leaders who the world considers “successful.” Despite the achievements they’ve had, a lot of people feel like there is still a sense of emptiness or a feeling that something is missing.
I honestly know that feeling well. In my 20’s, I was a singer/songwriter in a band called Winslow. In my time with Winslow, we worked with multiple Grammy award winners, Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, and had several National TV licensing deals. It was during this period of time that the hidden mental health battles took the highest toll on me.
That is one thing that I believe sets me apart from some other coaches. I’ve hit rock bottom in my life. Anxious. Driven to be successful while secretly depressed. Focused on saving the world while your world falls apart. Speaking life to others while secretly wishing I was dead.
I’ve been there and I get it. I’ve learned that most people live through unresolved trauma, drama, pain, or disappointment. They don’t always have the words for it, because they have always been the “strong ones.” I feel like my God-given purpose is to be one of the people who provide them with help and support.
In terms of the services I offer, I offer multiple free resources on my website including free coaching sessions and free downloads to assist in your personal and spiritual development.
For those who are tired of empty accomplishments and frustrated with being “successful” yet struggling, I am in the process of launching my new 6-week coaching program to help provide clarity and self-awareness on your greatest barriers (and they are usually not what you first think), foster personal and spiritual development, and truly hone in on goal setting with accountability.
I am excited to watch another group of people begin to change their lives to become more whole and healthy. There is nothing like watching people walk even deeper into their God-given purpose.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Authenticity. If there’s a bit of advice that I can pass on to those making their dreams come true, it is to embrace being yourself.
I learned the hard way that I’m pretty awful at being someone else. I can’t be my heroes, my mentors, or my “competitors.” Honestly, when you embrace fully becoming who you were born to be, there is no competition.
Every time I strive to become something I’m not, I find myself feeling frustrated. Instead, I continue to invest in becoming the best Maurice I can be. I want to be the greatest Maurice F. Martin the world has ever seen.
Clients who bring me on as a coach learn that I coach from a place of honesty and vulnerability. Life transformation requires people to walk toward everything they have been running from in life. I make sure my clients see that I’m not “above” them. I’m standing beside them, providing encouragement as they face it.
Whether I’m in the middle of a coaching session, giving an inspirational speech, or you are reading the pages of my books, I try to let you know that we are together in the struggle and I’ll be cheering for you as you overcome the things that have been holding you back.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I needed to unlearn the thought that I had to “prove them wrong.” I think we all have doubters, neigh-sayers, and haters in our lives, but they shouldn’t be our focus.
I’ve burned the candle at both ends, working tirelessly only to look towards them wondering if they were finally ready to acknowledge my success. I know that someone reading this article has been there.
I came to realize that constantly comparing myself to others and striving to prove people wrong was only causing me stress, anxiety, and burnout. I learned that true success and fulfillment come from focusing on my own unique strengths and abilities, producing the realest and best version of myself. From there I find where the realest me is needed and make a difference.
That mindset shift has not only helped me achieve a life transformation, but it has also allowed me to help others reach true spiritual alignment through my coaching. I believe that by embracing our individual strengths and gifts, we can unlock our full potential and achieve great success and happiness in all aspects of our lives.
