We were lucky to catch up with Maurice Ager recently and have shared our conversation below.
Maurice , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I, have dedicated myself to creating a nurturing environment where kids can not only develop their skills on the court, but also discover their inner strength, confidence, and teamwork spirit. It’s about using basketball as a springboard for personal growth and self-discovery.
With the Moe Ager Hoop School, witness the magic of basketball – on and off the court.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
From the Court to Building off the court
You wouldn’t believe the journey it’s been. From the streets of Detroit to the roar of the crowd at the Final Four, basketball has always been my life. But after hanging up my jersey, something new sparked a fire in me – the chance to share this amazing game with the next generation.
That’s why I started the Moe Ager Hoop School. It’s more than just drills and layups. It’s about using basketball as a tool to empower young players, just like the game empowered me. I remember the lessons learned on the court at Michigan State, the dedication it took to lead my team, and the importance of a positive mindset.
At the MAHS, we take these same values and translate them into life skills. Whether it’s building confidence, learning teamwork, or simply discovering the joy of the game, we’re here to help these kids find their own path to success. It’s been incredible to see the impact we’ve had on thousands of young players around the world, and it fuels my passion every single day.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
From the Game: As a basketball player, trusting your instincts on the court is crucial. You’ve learned to recognize openings, assess risks, and make split-second decisions based on your intuition. Translate this skill to life – listen to that inner voice when it warns you about a situation or person.
Identifying “Vultures”: Just like flashy plays can sometimes be traps set by the other team, some people might come across as charming or supportive but have ulterior motives. You’ve likely developed a keen eye to discern genuine connections from those seeking to benefit from your success.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Setting Boundaries: On the court, clear boundaries are essential for good sportsmanship. Similarly, in life, establish healthy boundaries with people. Don’t be afraid to say no to requests that drain your energy or compromise your values.
Building a Strong Support System: Surround yourself with positive and genuine people who believe in you and your goals. Just like a strong team on the court, a supportive network helps you navigate challenges and celebrate victories.
Prioritize Self-Care: As an athlete/creator, taking care of your physical and mental well-being is paramount for success. Apply the same principle to your life. Prioritize activities that recharge you, nurture your mental health, and allow you to maintain your inner strength.
