Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Maureen Brown. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Maureen, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
There is nothing more challenging nor more rewarding than working for yourself. Every day you are the master of your own fate. While it is unbelievably freeing to chart your own path, it is also at times terrifying! The reality of being your own boss, and employing others, is that the responsibility of leadership is with you day and night. It does not leave you on vacation, it does not leave you when you are at lunch, and it does not leave you when you’re out grocery shopping. You have times where you get a mental break, however, it is always with you. And I love it. After leading and working to grow Mosie Baby for years now, I am uncertain if I could ever go back to having a “regular job”. For now, I am here, doing my part to help remove stigma associated with insemination and provide a safe and empowering product for people to build their family on their own terms.
Maureen, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We created Mosie Baby out of our own personal need for a dignified, effective, and safe home insemination product. The Mosie Kit is the first of its kind, featuring the ground breaking Mosie syringe. Mosie is the first syringe designed specifically for home insemination and features a patented slit opening that mimics mother nature – the penile opening also has a slit opening. This is by design. This opening helps create a calmer passage for that precious cargo. In addition to this our syringe is thoughtfully designed with no sharp edges and to be as familiar to use as a tampon. Mosie Baby has helped create the home insemination market and has led the way in removing stigma associated with creating a family through insemination. We have over 40 million views on our social media and have helped thousands and thousands of families grow their family from the comfort of their own home.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A key moment for me was to realize that I cannot do it all. In the early days of building the business I worked like a mad woman. Endless hours, working as hard and fast as I could. At a certain point that no longer becomes viable for growing the business. I had to engage in delegating and trusting others to get the job done. And this is something I have had to do over and over again at each new milestone and phase of growth. I tackle a problem and then realize I can’t sustain working on this, and need to delegate.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When we first started Mosie Baby we mortgaged our home to fund it. It was barely, barely enough to get started. We were also funding it out of pocket as we went with whatever money we could scrounge together. We got our first round of syringes and kits produced. And then we got swindled. Yup. It’s hard to share this story but it’s true. We were naive and fresh faced and trusting – and we were taken advantage of by the person who we trusted to help us produce our kits. They vanished on us. Poof. It was horrible and we thought we were over before we even started. The money was gone and we were just on the verge of launching our company. Through some quick thinking of Marc (co-founder) and our engineer, we were able to find new partners that turned out to be fantastic partners. We had to work through a new payment structure and gave away a lot of margin up front, however it allowed us to survive and eventually thrive.
