We recently connected with Mattias Herreman and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mattias, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I was 17 years old when I realized music was going to be the goal I’d tackle on for my career. I had a bit of guitar playing experience from my sisters boyfriend who had been playing for years.
It wasn’t until my girlfriend at the time invited me to see this local band play at a bar in Fort Lauderdale called O’Malley’s. I was intrigued, but keep in mind, I was also very much to myself, so going out to a show was pretty much out of my comfort zone It helped that I had known the drummer in the band. His name was Pedro Romanelli. He was a year older than me and I had seen him in my neighborhood growing up. I went to the show with a few friends and was left utterly speechless after seeing the Castafellas perform. I remember they reminded me of the Arctic Monkeys. It was a three-piece, but in my opinion, Pedro showmanship as a drummer really touched me. I knew from that moment I wanted to be in a band. We would later join forces under The Carmics.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Honestly, one of the things I’m most proud of is the fact that I haven’t given up. This career path has become somewhat of a healthy obsession. It keeps me grounded, it keeps me focused, and it keeps me fulfilled. I’ve managed to incorporate my discipline into my workflow, and that has been a huge factor to my accomplishments. I try to approach everything I do with this mindset, I’ve noticed it’s brought me the most rewarding experiences.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My answer to this question five years ago would’ve probably been to play my songs in front of thousands of people. As I’ve gotten older and realized more about myself, the answer has changed. I think what drives me most is succeeding in something that I have chosen to pursue. Being a 24-year-old man in America and being privileged enough to been born and raised in the environment that I have, I’ve been able to choose to pursue music as my career. This industry is tricky, and some people would see it as a huge risk, But I see how hard I work every single day to achieve my goals and I find purpose in that. My purpose isn’t being famous or being rich. My purpose is in the little things I do every single day to grow my career.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I definitely think that outsiders could struggle to understand the validity and legitimacy of pursuing music as a career. I’ll be the first to say that a music career is a bit of a selfish profession. I often ask myself what am I putting into the world? How am I serving others? I don’t have many answers to those questions. I try to do what I can in other facets of my life. What I do know is true, is to make it in this industry you have to work your fucking ass off and I think to discredit an artists work ethic is unfair. We’ve all been given the chance to choose our professions, at least most of us have. In an ideal world, we can unite through the support of each others goals and dreams.
