We were lucky to catch up with Mattia Guolo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Mattia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most significant work of my career is the recent publication of the book NERO by Dolce & Gabbana. I have been collaborating with Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana for two years; during this time, I have worked closely with the two designers and developed a strong connection with the brand’s aesthetics and values. During this period, I had the opportunity to work on various projects, including two invitations for the FW 23 women’s and men’s fashion shows. The black and white services celebrate the sensuality and unmistakable style of the brand. Thanks to this project, I was able to fully express the potential of my aesthetics and my thoughts. This work is the cornerstone of my career because, in addition to its symbolic and artistic value, my name was for the first time associated with photography legends such as Helmut Newton, Steven Klein, and Mert & Marcus.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started like many of my colleagues, through a long path of studies and experience. I began by approaching this art in the most humble way, starting from the bottom by pulling cables and serving coffee.
I learned this profession silently, observing and making myself available to the photographers I worked with.
My work is very methodical and precise, as I believe that the pre-production process is the foundation of the creative process. A great preparation allows for creativity during the production phase. Additionally, I believe that meticulous preparation allows the entire crew to work in harmony on set.
I am a professional who values a healthy teamwork dynamic, empowering each individual member of the crew.
On set, I like to arrive prepared because it gives me a sense of security and freedom to act. This approach allows me to have the mental space to interact with the subjects I photograph, focusing solely on the image while everything else happens naturally.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding thing about my work is perhaps the most obvious and ancestral search that torments the human being. Not to be forgotten.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
The event that made me change course in my career was the birth of my first child. I was young and living day by day, with no need to plan or schedule my work. Everything happened randomly until I found myself, for obvious reasons, having to face a much more important task. Providing for my family became my main priority.
On that occasion, I took a step back in my career and decided to take some time to organize and structure myself better. Those years were difficult because I had to accept a different life than what I had imagined, but I realized that without that experience, I would not be the person and professional I am today.
It taught me to work humbly and consistently, and having the strength to pick myself back up made me more determined and convinced of the path I had embarked on.
