We recently connected with Matthew Trenhaile and have shared our conversation below.
Matthew, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I originally came to Atlanta in late 2018 after I graduated from the Conservatory of Recoding Arts and Sciences. I interned at Means Street Studios to begin my career. Early on it was quite apparent how to get ahead. We had a large team of roughly 3o interns and most were only there 3 days a week. All I had to do to gain an advantage was to be there as much as possible. When people see your face over and over they are much more likely to ask you to help out with something than an intern they see every now and then. Also, paying attention to what some of the engineers did helped out immensely. For example I noticed one engineer always sent runners to get two essentia waters every session, I would have it already waiting there for that engineer by the time he got there, and soon I was sitting in on his sessions. My biggest advice would be just to show up, be available, know when to say something and when to keep your mouth shut. I now work at Quality Control Studios and have worked with artists such as Lil Baby, Lil Yachty, Veeze, Rylo Rodriguez, and many more. I feel like being a good hang kept me in a lot of rooms before my skills eventually caught up.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I offer professional recording, mixing and mastering services. I think I answered in the last question how I got into my industry. I think the thing I’m most proud of is my persistance.. I was determined to make it in the music industry. I went to so school and interned with many people more talented than me at the time, but the majority of them quit and gave up when they didn’t get hired right out their internship. My persistance is what enabled me to last in this industry. I have noticed more times than not, in this industry persistence beats out talent 95% of the time. Something I want people to know about my brand that I believe makes me stand out is the fact, that while I have regularly worked with A List artists, I give everyone the same level of effort and attention to detail regardless of how many followers they have. The same effort I would give Lil Baby in a recording session, is the same effort I will give to each and every new client I work with.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part of my job is seeing a clients face light up after they listen to their song when I’m done mixing it. Seeing them happy with the final result is why I continue to do what I do.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I didn’t get hired out of my initial internship, but I just kept bouncing around from studio to studio throughout the years, working my way up, gaining new clients and experiences, and then I finally got call one night to take a session at QC and the rest is history.
