We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Matthew Thomas Komorowski a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Matthew Thomas, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I’ve always been a creative storyteller ever since high school english class. My teachers would always comment on my imaginative narratives, ability to craft compelling stories, and to think outside the box, which sparked an early passion for creative writing. I’ve always had that passion for entertaining others whether it was telling a story or joke to someone, acting out a funny sketch, being goofy with my friends, or just a simple conversation. This fascination extended beyond the classroom and into the world of television and film. I love being able to watch a story and get swept up into that world. The feeling like you’ve known these characters and grew up with them, becoming apart of their town or world. Everyone has their own origin story, and for me it wasn’t until I had gotten laid off from a job i’d been at for 7 years. I was weighing my options and finally thought “I’ve always loved t.v and films so why not learn how to do that!” I went into film school wanting to become an editor but after writing my first sketch with my brother and then using that to practice my editing, I soon found my other love of writing again. Being able to take a puzzle piece by piece and work with other creatives to bring it all together giving life to an idea is truly a gift and accomplished goal.

Matthew Thomas, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into filmmaking just like any other creative. The desire to tell a story, share an idea, connect with other individuals that may have a similar experience. In 2016 I started my first production company called Dachshund Media where it was solely myself, I would have help from my brothers when needed. Dachshund Media produces commercials, social media content, music videos, and event coverage. I shot my first commercial for a local bistro and bar which landed itself a spot onto bay news channel 9 and from then on it was a constant hustle to grow and learn as much as I can from all levels of experienced creatives. At the end of 2023 I created another company called The Belvoir Film Company (aka Belvoir Films) which serves mainly to produce short films, feature films, series and episodic content. Belvoir Films offers a variety of filmmaking services from script writing, script consultation, producing, set design, and much more. Our goal is to create real, compelling, and emotional stories. Whether it’s a comedy, drama, horror or sci fi our goal is to connect people and share a common interest…life.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
The best resource is to network. If you’re aspiring creative or filmmaker networking is the best resource you can have, connecting with others that share your passion or have succeeded goals in order to create, build and grow. Go to festivals, show up to networking events, get on many projects as you can you’ll always be meeting someone new and that’s an opportunity to gain more knowledge. I find that you can learn from everyone and everything around you, it doesn’t matter if you have 10 days experience vs 10 years, all knowledge is a great powertool.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Many goals but one mission, to share with the world. A story is an emotional ride. Being able to bring along an audience or individual for that ride, to create and capture an experience they’ll remember and hopefully relate to is an exciting feeling.
