We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Matthew Smith a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Matthew thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
I wrote a children’s book back in 2019. It’s basically a rhyming poem that became a picture book called, “I Love Blue Macaroons.” In 2021, I wrote the sequel called, “I Love Blue Macaroons TOO”. My daughter was taking acting lessons at a previous theater company in our small town in 2022. After a year, the owner of the company decided to go back to college. My wife, Kristie and I knew how much our daughter enjoyed acting and we knew that she found her passion with theatre, so we decided to take over the space and create our own theatre company in town. I immediately had the name because I was of the opinion that just another “So-and-so Community Theatre” wouldn’t stand out and could have a number of limitations. It was a no-brainer. “We’re calling it the Blue Macaroon Theater Company.” So here we are.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve always had a creative side. I loved to draw and do “artsy” types of activities as a child. I created TV show episodes with my toys, recorded myself on cassette tapes pretending that I was on the radio. I enjoyed sports too, but I was always into movies, TV shows, music, and the inner workings of those things. My dream job as a kid was to be radio DJ and run a TV station. I ended up working in radio from 1991 – 2003. After that, my wife and I had our first child, so I did go get a computer science degree and got a job in IT. A lot of the creativity that I had earlier in life got suppressed. The Blue Macaroon Theater Company has certainly revitalized me. One of my many goals with the theater is to help revitalize the arts and creativity that maybe a person, or even a town may have lost – or even bring it out in someone, or somewhere, where it’s been hiding.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
At the Blue Macaroon Theater Company we offer acting and music lessons. The goals with those are to help create and develop a crop of future stars. We’ve had several of our students excel in the field and they have already been in local productions. Seeing them flourish and the looks on their faces during a standing ovation and seeing the smiles on their families faces in the crowd makes it all worth it to me. By far the most rewarding aspect so far.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Our mission really is to entertain, educate, create, and inspire. Our last three productions were all sold-out runs. The possibilities are really endless when you have a stage. One of the things I want to make sure of is that we are not pigeon-holed. The Blue Macaroon Theater is a welcoming space. I want to hear everyone’s story; I want everyone to tell their story no matter how different from or how similar it may be to someone else’s.
