Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Matthew Sato. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Matthew, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
One of the biggest trends within my industry is the resurgence of disco music concepts, showcasing a fascinating blend of various generational influences. There’s a notable shift towards shorter content that delves into more sensitive topics across various entertainment mediums such as film, music, and social media. I’ve also noticed that AI is playing a significant role in generating new ideas and content to shape creative expression. The word “viral” is everywhere on social media, showing how content spreads like wildfire. It’s essential to keep up with these trends to navigate today’s pop culture scene, where creativity and cool tools are changing how we express ourselves.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was born in Tokyo and spent my early years there before relocating to Yokohama, Japan, where I attended an international school from kindergarten until my senior year. My upbringing was quite unique; my family and friends embraced Western culture while also preserving our Japanese traditions at home.
Growing up, both of my parents had a deep appreciation for music, with favorites like Toto, Celine Dion, Steve Perry, Journey, and Michael Jackson. My musical journey began when I first played the drums at my summer school in Hawaii as this solidified my love for the drums. This sparked my desire to play the drums and pursue a career in performance.
For college, I attended Berklee College of Music to study Film Scoring. It took some time to figure out my passion, but since I had a passion and experience for both film and music, Film Scoring seemed like the perfect fit. This major opened a whole new lens into the world of film and animation production.
Music has always held a special place in my heart, and though I can’t explain why, I fully embrace the adventure it brings.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My objective and goals change throughout the specific project I get to work on. However, a general goal for me is to deliver music that I think is the best, making sure that the director and producer enjoys the music that I produce, and also putting in the extra time to really understand what the story is. This helps me hear the music in my head first before writing or inputting notes into my computer. Constantly working with the best people in their field drives my creative journey.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Building my reputation within the industry has been a culmination of various factors. Consistently meeting deadlines, being on top of responding to any communication, and genuinely celebrating others’ successes have been pivotal. In my industry, it’s also crucial to stay updated with new techniques and trends. These simple yet essential practices have played a significant role in shaping my reputation and identity within the music and film industry.
