Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Matthew Sanjari. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Matthew, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
After a near death experience left me with an uncertain future and shaky career prospects, I found myself having to pivot and reinvent what was next for me. Entrepreneurship felt like a natural, but scary step. The nature of my injuries and disabilities post accident left me with a business that was forever hanging by a thread – seemingly losing clients as quickly as I gained them. At any one point – I was one bad bout of headaches or chronic pain away from losing my business entirely.
It’s in that reality that I realized my mission. If, heaven forbid, a month away from my business would leave me with nothing to come back to – did I really have a business? When you don’t show up to your job, you dont get paid. The reality is that I didn’t have a business as much as I had another job, this time with my clients as the boss. It’s in this that I discovered a key tenet of my mission.
Helping others get unstuck, overcome plateaus, and transition from being operators to owners, from employees to executives – empowering them to be business owners, and not just business operators.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
After a life changing near-death accident in 2012, Matthew Sanjari was left battling chronic pain, extended depression and cognitive disabilities. Over the course of the next 5 years – Matt struggled to regain any semblance of a normal life, struggling with extreme weight gain, an inability to keep full time work or to maintain a normal routine. Now 12 years later, Matt has started multiple businesses, owns and develops real estate and helps business owners, entrepreneurs and leaders as a Coach and Consultant in his newest venture, hoping to inspire people to push past their limitations and realize their full potential.
It’s over the course of this journey – a journey that has seen Matthew transition from founding a marketing business, being a pastor, being involved in real estate development – to now his current venture as a business coach and strategic consultant that he realized his real why. It didn’t matter the skin or the window dressing of what he had done. Whether that was marketing, pastoring, public speaking or now – his life has always been about seeing people reach their full potential, leaving nothing on the table. A passion for seeing high performers and aspiring, ambitious individuals actually build lives that are sustainable and growth-fuelled.
Matthew is the founder and lead business coach of PRIME Consulting, a dynamic consultancy known for its pragmatic and strategic approach to scaling business and helping entrepreneurs reach their potential. Matthew has helped transform numerous brands and companies in his current role as a business coach and strategic consultant, as well at previous company as a marketing consultant. Matthew is passionate about helping business owners push past plateaus and scale their businesses – offering an alternative to traditional coaching and consulting services. As a consultant he works with management and operations teams to implement the very strategies he and the ownership work on in coaching sessions – a two-pronged approach that has yielded impressive results for his clients. Matthew is a firm believer that when we build people, we build business. He has a successful exit under his belt, and has been a key player in multiple companies and non-profits over his 15+ years of experience in the field of business optimization and growth.
With multiple entrepreneurial endeavours and a successful business exit, Matt has helped clients in Canada, the US and Europe – across a variety of industries including publicly traded companies. As a public speaker, he has reached audiences in both Canada and the United States.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
The story of my near death car accident that left me with chronic pain, debilitating injuries and a lack of consistency during my rehab. This pivotal moment that at the time seemed like life was ending, became a blessing in disguise, as it propelled me into years of character building, entrepreneurship and learning life lessons to help others do the same.
Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
One of my favourite stories has to be how I got into my first business. After a year spent unemployed, barely functional and struggling with direction in life amid chronic pain and severe depression – a friend called me up. He was working at a local pool shop, and needed my help with their computer systems, something I had become adept to watching my father be an IT Consultant for years. I was desperate for any income and a break, so I jumped at the opportunity – even if it really was just fixing a computer system. While I was there I struck up a friendly conversation with the owner. Over the course of our conversation he relayed some of his journey in business, and the topic of marketing came up. He was concerned about some of the marketing efforts and asked my opinion – to which I gave an honest opinion that not only could it be better, but perhaps the money could be spent more efficiently. He was taken aback that I didn’t try to upsell him or inflate the price because of his honesty. He awarded me the contract over a lunch – and that was my first marketing client, and the beginning of my first official company.
