Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Matthew Rosas. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Matthew, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I’ve always been intrigued with fashion and how to express what’s in my head without saying a word and I found fashion to be that outlet. So I decided to start making my own clothing and taught myself how to sew.
I believe reaching out to more mentors and not doing it alone would have sped up the process.
The skill most essential to this was interaction and connection with other creatives.
Imposter syndrome and financials has stood in the way of learning more.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into Upcycled fashion by being inspired by Virgil Abloh. Researching and learning his journey opened an opportunity in my mind that I could try to create and learn how to establish my own brand through clothing.
I am most proud that I have not quit. I want to quit everyday and allow certain negative thoughts and comparing myself to others win on certain days. But I havnt let it win to the point of quitting. I have a vision and thrive to see that vision through.
I want to be able to provide others to see that in themselves as well, especially my two sons who have seen me in the ups and downs of this two year journey. I want anyone who has purchased something from me or have worked with myself to see that they deserve to be seen and heard.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I have to unlearn to stop comparing myself to others and what they have done and accomplished, whether that’s based on age or privilege.
Growing up in sports and being pushed to be the best, you begin to develop this competitiveness that can hinder your own wellbeing just to reach this certain expectation. I will never regret that competitiveness, but it comes with comparison and the territory.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I was a basketball coach and educator for 7 years and believed that’s what I was placed on this earth to do. Many things happened within that time, good and bad, but I learned that it’s hard for me to take certain orders and realizing I can be replaced at any moment was a hard pill to swallow. That’s when I decided to start my own business and bet on myself.
