We recently connected with Matthew Odom and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Matthew, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I learned what to do by sitting up for hours on end watching youtube and learning tutorials. If I would’ve done things differently, I would have shadowed a photographer as it provides skills that you normally don’t see until you are in the field on a live shoot the experience really prepares you for the real world.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a commercial and Editorial photographer that primarily focuses on portraiture for editorial magazines and commercial advertising clientele. I started out as a part-time wedding photographer and desired a bigger challenge. Most shoots revolve around me photographing subjects in their element. I want people to know that no matter where you are from that you can make it as a creative if you put in hard work and be willing to grow. I’m thrilled that I’m able to do what I love to do on a daily basis and make art in the process.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I don’t think NFT’s are really a big deal at this time. Most people want to own physical art and still are willing to pay a nice price for it.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
I went full-time after I was laid off from my prior job. I decided to do small work to b uild up my portfolio until I had enough reputable work that caught the eye of individuals who allow me the opportunity to showcase my talents.
