We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Matthew Nicholson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Matthew, thanks for joining us today. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
The idea of Dim Horizon Studio “as a business” came to me from a very early age. I was raised in a household where we always had some form of creative undertaking underway with most of them maturing to some stage of stable business model.
I noticed that all of them usually had their own specialty which then lead to all sorts of complications from a business model perspective. As only a child could decide, I wanted something different that would ultimately allow me to grow as an artist, creative, and business without necessarily tieing me down to a particular sector or product.
The brand & business behind Dim Horizon Studio started as little more than an idea and has now become a cornerstone of my life as a photography studio with multiple unique offerings in that sector in addition to a host of direct services once you become a member of our creative family.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I personally started my ideation of Dim Horizon Studio as a photography venture during my time at Kennesaw State University working through my undergraduate degree.
I was in desperate need of a creative outlet while also wanting to begin my own journey of learning parallel to all my other antics at KSU. I literally grabbed the first camera, which happened to be an Olympus D-304L, I could access & began shooting whatever was available in my packed daily life.
From those humble beginnings, I’ve been shooting for roughly 15 years and have achieved quite a few wonderful things beginning with being published nationally and internationally multiple awards, and finally building a business around creativity with a wonderful network of clients keeping us busy.
Have you ever had to pivot?
In my overall life, I had a tremendous shift in focus in late 2008 as I was laid off from my “other” job and decided it was time for a break.
That break really turned into fueling the passion behind Dim Horizon Studio and building a foundation for the business to grow & move forward. It was a rare time in my life where I had the opportunity and time both in equal amounts to pour that into a singular creative effort without the risk of necessarily burning myself out.
That full pivot in my efforts while also being free of a traditional 9 to 5 was critical leading to my overall success today.
The main thing I focused on during those days was the more boring side of the business by defining an overarching business plan, revenue model, defining budgetary processes to ensure profitability.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
In one of my many creative adventures, I played a key role in a fun organization at KSU called S.W.O.R.D. ( students who occasionally roll dice ).
It was during that time I met Nicole and our friendship blossomed quickly. Our first date was the moment where she said she fell for me because it’s literally true in all accounts. On that fabled night, I had just gotten off of another 20-hour work cycle that left me a little delirious and exhausted to a concerning level. We were walking close and chatting across the campus green enjoying the quiet moment. In what felt like a blink to me Nicole was standing next to me and then entirely gone as she tripped and fell to the ground with both her hands in her hoodie. I felt terrible as I would have normally been able to catch her but given my exhaustion, I simply didn’t have the reflexes. After a hushed moment of bruised egos and helping her to her feet again I realized that there was something special about her and I wanted to get to know her better.
It’s now fair to say one thing let to another after all that I understood I had met my better half and our relationship grew to be integrated into every aspect of my life with Dim Horizon Studio being a key aspect of all that.
Nicole supported me during some of the more difficult times of starting the business and now as a partner, she’s undertaking her own aspects of the business breaking my own previously achieved records.
