We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Matthew Mullins a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Matthew, thanks for joining us today. Who is your hero and why? What lessons have you learned from them and how have they influenced your journey?
my father, he has taught me at a young age that when you want something in life, that you have to go out and work for it. rather its a car or a house, and its not given to you. To have a goal in life and setup small goals at stepping stones to reach your main goal. along with money, to set a budget, and put X amount of money in savings, because you never know when something happnes like if your car breaks down, you will need money to get it towed, and also have money to fix the issue.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
i started photography while working at a car dealership, and 5 years into working there as a service porter, I was asked if i wanted to take pictures of the new and pre-own cars and to upload the pictures on the company website. this was around 2016, and i started getting compliments on how the cars looked in the pictures, since i had to take different angles outside and inside of each vehicle, though the camera was owned by the company. So i decided to buy my own camera, and just start going around places like downtown kansas city, plaza and just practice different ways to take pictures and edit, and post them on my facebook, then people would tell me how they liked them, and also gave me advise on how to take pictures and also edit to help me get better. Then i decided to make a photography page also a instagram page to help get my name out there. Rather its just architecture, nature, or photoshoots.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
when i had people wanting to buy my pictures, and how my pictures stand out better and better. Then coming across other photographers and when we show each others pictures from our cameras they like how cool the angle looked of a building i took and ask how to make the editing better.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
facebook is a big one, then instagram. I had followers messege me wanting to collab with me, and then they helped spread the word about me, along with me passing out business cards.
