We were lucky to catch up with Matthew Morgan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Matthew thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I feel like I was born a song writer. I come from a very musical family going back generations and when I was a kid I was terrible at music lessons because instead of learning the songs I would naturally take elements from the pieces I was learning and turn them into my own creations. Also, from as early as I can remember I would put on my headphones and listen to the same song over-and-over, each time focusing on a different instrument and pretending I was that person in the band…I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was training my ears to understand how different instruments/sounds support the song and how to arrange music.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was raised in a musical household; my mom was a well known voice coach and piano teacher. I knew from a very early age that I was passionate about music and it just seemed like a regular part of life. It wasn’t until I was much older that I realized that most people don’t grow up in a house where music is constantly being played from morning until night with students and colleagues coming and going at all hours.
But, many people might be surprised to know that I”m naturally pretty shy and introverted. I was very reluctant to show my songs and compositions to anyone for a very long time. It wasn’t until I suffered a chronic illness in my mid-twenties that left me housebound for 18 months that I started to take my songwriting seriously and show my music to other people. I guess it took the experience of realizing that time is short and everything can be taken away from you in a moment’s notice to give me the push to start sharing my music publicly.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
A common theme in my songwriting is giving a voice to people in marginalized communities in society. I guess this stems from my own experience growing up as an LGBTQIA+ person. I wouldn’t say I am intentional about writing my lyrics with diverse themes, but it happens pretty naturally. Life is so much more interesting when we make room for everyone!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Without citing any specific examples I’ve had to learn the hard way that there are a lot of people in the creative industry making their own side hustle by pretending to be allies, or providing “must have” services to help you promote your work and get your name/brand adequate recognition. It’s disgusting how many of these charlatans target artists/creatives just starting out, often charging high prices for their “expert” services! Before you agree to work with anyone always verify their credentials, search them on google, try to find proof of others they’ve claimed to work with and never believe anything anyone tells you at face value.
