We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Matthew Morgan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Matthew below.
Matthew, appreciate you joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
When I first started performing in front of people, which was right before Covid hit, I would do an open mic at Spring Park Coffee, or the Atlantic Beach Songwriters Night. And that’s it. I played about 5 times, alternating between those two. So with about five performances under my belt, I ended up in a conversation with the Murray Hill Theatre, who invited me to play a show with them.
Now just for some background, the Murray Hill is where I’ve seen some of my favorite bands play over the years, big time international acts. My favorite concert ever was seeing Burlap to Cashmere there. So to be asked to play there was a bit intimidating, given my stage in the game. But I thought, might as well go big. It’s an opportunity that I might kick myself for not taking. So my answer was Yes.
Needless to say, I gave myself knots in my stomach for 3 months as I waited for my gig. I was a wreck. But when the event came, I had a lot of peace, and because I had practiced my butt off for those months, I played okay. Its was rad, the fog machines, the lights, looking out into a dark crowd of people. Well worth the risk.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
Well to begin with, It was on my honeymoon with my wife that I decided I wanted to pursue music a bit more in depth. We were in Asheville North Carolina. You know, one day it was the Biltmore house, one day it was going to some waterfalls in someone’s backyard. It was mountains and freedom. It hit me in downtown Asheville, in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the trendy restaurants and hipster joints, that I needed to get the songs off my notebook and into production and performance.
Maybe it was some thing about downtown Asheville‘s insane scene that was infiltrating me at the time, if you haven’t been down there it’s definitely worth the trip. There was a restaurant that is said to have a two month waiting list and we happen to stop by there just for the heck of it, and some doctors invited us to sit at their table and we got in without even calling ahead of time. Yeah, Asheville was lit.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Yeah I would say that my goal is to record all the songs that I have stored away in my song vault. They’re all so special to me, kind of like children, I just have too many of them though (ridiculous problem to have, I know) and studio time isn’t cheap. I think I’m sitting on about 40 songs that I need to record, and then I’ll feel a bit of a release, satisfaction as well, and then who knows…maybe more after that. I feel like they’re all as planes at an airport waiting for lift off, and each one gets its time.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being creative?
This is an easy question, it’s when people, random people that you’ve never met, maybe across the world, maybe speaking a different language, find your music appealing… and when I get a message asking something like “when is this song gonna be out on Apple or Spotify,” and the Youtube comments on the music videos…those are really rad to read. Those are the times when it’s rewarding. You make a piece of art and you put a lot of time and energy into it, and then it all is worth it when people are getting off on it
