We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Matthew Massey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Matthew , thanks for joining us today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
Growing up I always knew I wanted to eb an artist like my father, but bigger and better! But it was uncertainty on the road there until the end of my college career when decided to focus up. During my senior of college while I was working I was inspired to come up with my name. I tell all my students this is the start because it then becomes real. After that i manifested my business by meeting people, learning, listening, and trusting the process.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Artist, Matthew Massey, was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. He is a former Saginaw Valley State University alumni and athlete who has obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Art with a minor in Graphic Design in 2021. Following in the footsteps under the tutelage of his father Dr. Hubert Massey, Matthew had started creating murals in 2018, and has been teaching Junior High School Art for the past 2 years after college completion.
Being surrounded by art was such a big influence in my life. But learning to be independent and the hustle taught me the discipline to achieve great heights.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
During entrepreneurship and in life things will happen unexpectedly. There will be up and downs in business. For instance my business was doing well and as owners do they invest to monopolize. Went into business with a trusted partner and was cut out. This at the time was detrimental but you live and learn because of my diligence I was able to over come these circumstances.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Trust the process and good things come to those who wait. I learned that everything happened for a reason, but your mindset and attitude dictate how you receive the world.
