Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Matthew Gomez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Matthew, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
My short film ‘LUXURE’ holds a special place in my heart. It was my biggest and longest project at the time, roughly about 35 minutes long. From writing it, to directing, to editing… I was able to grow & meet so many wonderful people that I work with on all my projects with now. With a tight budget, we were able to accomplish something bigger than ourselves, with even having the film premiere at the Frida Cinema in Santa Ana. ‘Luxure’ is now out on YouTube!
Matthew, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My love for storytelling has been around since I was a young boy, but it was in high school when I made a YouTube channel with my friends that I realized filmmaking is a career I want to do full time. With my experience writing/directing/editing, I’m essentially able to create and control the story in every aspect. Working with me I’m able to help you get your vision straight out of your head & onto the screen…Whether it’d be Film, Commercials, or music videos.
With every project comes it’s own problems, and I’m very much invested in the project from beginning to end. I’m able to remove my emotions from the situation to strategically and creatively figure out each endeavor and make sure the project in completed the way it was meant to be.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
While filming for ‘LUXURE’ we had a very tight budget, which limited our shooting days/time. So for three days straight, we filmed for 12-15 hours back to back. Early mornings & late nights, but we were all there, I made sure to keep everyone fed and happy, and we were able to accomplish everything we needed to.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The one thing I had to unlearn, was that I wasn’t good enough or smart enough to do things on my own. I often felt like I couldn’t make the right choices for myself because others could do it better for me, and this affecting when I was doing the YouTube channel with my friends back in high school.
I believe being the youngest child has a part to play. My father passed away when I was 7,, so I think the family would do a lot of things for me to overcompensate for that loss in a sense. So I didn’t develop independence when I was a child.
So this was the one thing I had to unlearn, or else I wouldn’t be able to grow as a competent person or director, and over the years I have had a complete mindset shift and I’m the leader I know I have to be.
