We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Matthew Giampietro Landscape Designer a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Matthew Giampietro, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
Outdoor living has become increasingly popular.
The awareness has grown through home remodeling shows and Instagram.
But, it was living through Covid when people realized the importance of outdoor living.
People are exposed to so many different ideas for outdoor living and their backyard spaces.
Spending more time at home, people are using the outdoors as their main form of entertainment and recreation.
We are creating ‘outdoor living rooms’.
Our typical landscape designs include everything from swimming pools, lounges, outdoor kitchens, fire pits and gardens.
Almost all of my designs include a covered seating area. Modern aluminum pergolas are very popular, and include many of the same amenities as you have indoors, like a TV and couches.
Influenced by the remote work environment, we are designing outdoor office spaces and outdoor studios.
I am also seeing a trend towards edible gardening.
We are planning vegetable gardens, and all kinds of fruit trees, mangos, papaya, passion fruit, and lychee trees.
It has also become popular to include sporting activities such as; corn hole, pickleball, basketball, bocce ball, and volleyball.
Matthew Giampietro, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started in the landscape industry as a teenager working for my Father’s family business in Connecticut. Our family owned a plant nursery and my father was an extremely talented landscape designer. It was my father’s work that inspired me to pursue a degree in horticulture as well as a degree in Landscape Architecture. One of the very unique features of my father’s work was creating naturalistic rock waterfalls. Because of this, I spent several months studying the art of rock arranging in Kyoto, Japan. My father and I continued designing and building award winning landscapes until 2000, when my father suddenly passed away, leaving me with big shoes to fill.
A few years later, I received a call to build a waterfall in South Florida. I ended up relocating to Florida in 2003 where I began a Waterfall company. It wasn’t until about five years ago that I started designing entire properties as we did in Connecticut. Now, I am proud to create some truly exquisite landscapes and gardens. The most satisfying part about what I do is creating spaces for people. People appreciate what we do. We are helping people live a lifestyle that they dream of when it comes to their home and properties. Our landscape designs are a reflection of our clients personality. We can design in any style, modern, tropical, mediterranean, european formal, english country cottage or Japanese Zen.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I am always striving to stay current with design trends, ideas and styles. In order to be at the top of my game, I never stop leaning and studying new ideas.
It is my responsibility to create landscape designs that will still be appealing in 20, 30 years from now.
Have you ever had to pivot?
There have been times when the people surrounding me influenced me to explore other ways of doing things. I believe that it is important to listen to other people’s suggestions. This exploration made me take some risks and learn new ways of doing things.
