We were lucky to catch up with Matthew George recently and have shared our conversation below.
Matthew, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Not that long ago really. About four years ago, half way through my sophomore year at the University of North Texas. At that point in my life I had been taking photos and creating videos for about 3 years as a hobby. This is when I had starting falling in love with the creative process.I had no interest in any classes unless they allowed me. be creative in them. To the point where pulling all nighters working on photo sets came easy to me and happened often. I was meeting more creatives and getting more interested. Im very grateful for the creative community around me, they really showed me love and guidance as i starting taking my craft more serious. As got better at my craft, my schedule started filling up with more and more bookings. I could see people really appreciate my art and creative vision.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Matthew George Njuguna also known as the “The 14th Shooter” and I am a photographer, visual artist, creative director, entrepreneur, fashion designer, and filmmaker. I bring visions to life.
Ive been taking photos since my junior year of high school in 2017. I got into photography and film on accident really. Before 11th grade, I had been taking classes to pursue a career in engineering. I had taking engineering class for years at that point thinking it was supposed to do. The problem was that this path bored me. So junior year comes and I have space in my schedule so I decide to take this class called ” Audio/Visual 1 “. What i didn’t know was this was really a film class. I didn’t really look too much into the class before signing up so it caught me off guard the first few days. As we starting going into the fundamentals of filmmaking and making our own videos, I found myself excited to go to class. Which eventually led me to start checking out school cameras to take pictures on my own time throughout the last couple years of high school.
I love to shoot creative editorial photography. but I use my photography and videography for many other uses. I offer creative direction for all my work. I create custom cover art and music videos for artists. I work heavily with Zebratail Studios as one of their main photographers and shoot official movie posters for their films including their upcoming film “Recurrence” For last couple years i’ve been working with other creatives and brands to create Behind the Scenes content with photos and videos. I take a lot of inspiration from fashion and film. On any project I work on, I like to make sure I work with the client to breakdown how they want the final product to feel on a emotional level and the desired goals/purpose of the project. I take pride in my unique creative vision. I can do 100 photoshoots and every shoot will be different from the next.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I’d say the most rewarding part for me is the impact on the client, during and after the shoot. I love showing the client a preview during a shoot and their face lights up with excitement. One thing I take pride in is when a client loves a photo I took of them enough to make it their profile photo for any social media platform. I always try to leave the client or model with better self image of themselves.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal in my creative journey is to make this world a more beautiful place to be, in whatever way I can. Whether thats through the photos I take or through the stories I film or the clothes I make. I want to be the ultimate conduit for creative ideas from the imagination to the real world. Not only bringing my visions to life but also helping bring the visions of the other creative thinkers around me.
