We were lucky to catch up with Matthew Bishop recently and have shared our conversation below.
Matthew, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
One of the biggest trends or concerns in my industry is the rapidly improving technology of smartphone cameras. Senior photos can now be done by your friends at a decent level of quality. This has lead everyone who has a smartphone to call themselves a photographer. This is true to an extent, but it begs the question: What makes a good photographer? Photography is all about storytelling. A good photographer curates a story. Taking a still of your friend may create nice photographs, but good photographers never shoot at random. They plan a shoot around their subject, noting every little detail in pursuit of the capture. The rapidly improving quality of smartphone cameras will only change the technology, the crucial backbone of a photographer is their experience.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
The story of how I got involved is not that interesting, so I won’t go into it. I offer all types of photography services, such as weddings, graduation, engagements or seniors. Lately I have been getting into fashion photography. I love the creative freedom I get in picking out outfits and curating a location. This is where I see the greatest potential to distinguish myself as an artist. I want to create controversial art, you know stuff that breaks the mold. Working with fashion models gives me the opportunity to create beautiful and eye catching art. I hope to work with a publisher in the future, such as Calvin Klein.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I am absolutely inspired by the thought of working with a publisher. I want to create art that challenges. Working with a publisher would give me the exposure to impact. The ability to tell someone’s story to the mainstream, that’s true influence. I feel like we all provide something to the world. Mine is the ability to enter someone’s character, the camera is simply the vessel to describe what I see.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I’ve always loved a good story. Life can be so meaningless without it. Why do what your doing? A great story has struggle, pain, passion and motivation. Most people don’t live an exciting story when the choose the most efficient path to their livelihood. Sometimes embracing a greater struggle is better for you long-term. Everyone has distinguishable characteristics that make them inherently interesting, but most of the time these are matted by the mundanity of life. As a photographer I have an ability to bring these traits to life, that’s why I do it.
