We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Matteo Freyrie. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Matteo below.
Matteo, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I’ve had the pleasure of working on the organisation of a branded Eat The Beat show in Melbourne presenting Loco Dice, and also be the Dj warming up the dance-floor for him! I remember years ago when i started attending club nights as a party goer with my friends i used to travel often to different cities to follow him and be present at his performances and he really made a difference with his music, It triggered in me a passion for electronic music thanks to a rhythm that I found and still find irresistible! From there, I began to have a passion for Djing, and having had the opportunity to organise the event and play before him was a unique experience that I had dreamed of for a long time and will never forget!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
When i moved to Australia about 10 years ago i was in my 20s, i didnt have many things clear in my mind about life, but i was loving music enough to be travelling with all my dj equipments and i was Djing for fun and for my friends as soon as i had a chance. While growing up the passion was always stronger and the desire to break into the industry and become an affirmed DJ was always stronger. That’s when going around for nightclubs and connecting for the people in the industry i came across some other likeminded people with similar goals and that’s when the Eat The Beat project took shape. From there things really started to flow for me, i had the possibility of expressing myself as a DJ and be in contact with party goers who would really start to know me and attend our events and my djset pretty much every week. Today i have had the pleasure of playing alongside some of the main DJs in the industry, i have headlined shows in all Australia and played at different events around the world, all while Eat The Beat expanded from being a weekly club night in Melbourne, to become an International Event company and a Booking Agency managing local and international Talents! The jourey is in continuous evolution and presents new challenges everyday, I feel like there is still a long way to go and everyday im spending time in the studio to work on music productions and craft DJ set that with the hope that they leave a mark on people, especially the younger ones who come to listen.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being an artist is a journey with up and downs, driven by inspiration and and a core passion for electronic music. The most rewarding aspect for me comes from the most loyal followers who are present at most of my performances and always make me feel like im doing something great for them even in time where im not as satisfied with the outcome! Being surrounded by people who dance to my music and are energised by my own sound at live performances is extremely rewarding and is one of the forces which always pushes me to do better and keeps my motivation sky high!
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I think a lot of people don’t realise how hard it is to stay motivated while producing music and performing for an audience, most people see the DJ as someone who is having the best time of his life all the times, while i always enjoy being in the Dj booth and in front of a dancing crowd, there are many ups and downs and days where there is just no inspiration in making new music or where it feel like what im doing is not good enough, other days where the lifestyle of being a DJ seems impossible to balanced with a healthy lifestyle. With time i’ve learned to appreciate the challenges and that most times pushing through these low-motivation moment is what brings you to an even better and stronger mindset afterwards.
