We recently connected with Matte Velvet and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Matte thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
My latest project, “Burnin’ Daylight,” has been my most meaningful project I’ve worked on thus far. It was the first time I allowed myself full creative freedom without worrying about judgement. It explores finding joy in the small things while recognizing the darkness that lies beneath the surface. Burnin’ Daylight poses the question- “Is it too late for me?” But what I’ve found since its release on 9/13, is the complete opposite. This project has renewed my sense of wonder and excitement when it comes to my music, film, and overall aesthetic. I have released several music videos for Burnin’ Daylight at the time of this interview and have a few more left release. Throughout the rollout process, I’ve received such great feedback and have been breaking my own records with streaming numbers and YouTube views. It’s funny how simply being vulnerable can have such a positive impact on the output.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a musician who’s passionate about my bodies of work and how each visual and auditory part of the project is displayed. I see each new project as not “just an album,” but a moment in time. It’s a collection of my thoughts, feelings, and visual taste. I think what sets me apart is my individual story that’s unique to me and the more I lean into that instead of trying to be like someone else, the more well-received it becomes.
I’m most proud of not giving up because there are several times throughout my music career that I’ve entertained that idea. Luckily, I suppose, I just can’t turn it off. For me, like many others, creating is therapeutic and a way of processing deep emotions.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is seeing people connect and relate to the art you make. I would be doing it anyways because it’s what I’m passionate about, but seeing people love it is the cherry on top.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is to move towards a more sustainable way of creating my art while traveling the world. I would love to film a music video on every continent!
