We were lucky to catch up with Matt Munoz recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Matt thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
In my opinion, the ability to adapt is essential to being successful no matter the life or career path. When I say ‘adapt’, I don’t mean abandon your personal goals and interests. As the Rolling Stones once wrote…’You can’t always get what you want,’ and that’s the truth. Over the years, I’ve had to learn to adapt to new technologies and environments in order to keep my hustle on. Through my journey I’ve learned and earned by proving my adaptability in pretty much any situation. It also doesn’t hurt to keep your ego and pride in check, especially as the demographics of your work environment changes. Keep an open mind.

Matt, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have many, but for the past two decades I’ve worked in the media and communications industries as a journalist, marketing guru, content producer, podcaster, and radio personality. I entered the media industry after college with a goal to become a PR specialist in the entertainment industry. Join the club, right?
Well, as life would have it, I jumped into the news media field at the dawn of social networking. A new digital frontier was born and as I began making a name for myself online as a shameless self-promoter of my various creative endeavors, I was eventually discovered by a local media group who hired me to take over a new niche media venture. Over the course of 5 years, I learned and taught myself everything about social media moderating, effective communication styles, appealing to various demographics, serving the underserved and multimedia techniques.
I stand on my belief that adaptability is key to a person’s individual success. I’ve never been the youngest person on the team, but if you’re patient and take time to know the needs of the community and audience you’re trying to reach, you will have an impact and career stability.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Being honest and staying true to your personal beliefs. Lord knows it’s easy to get lost on the Web, but you shouldn’t push yourself to the point of unrecognizability. Personal evolution is essential, but once you’ve developed a voice, find a way to keep it strong. Everybody has something inside, it’s just a matter of unlocking it and setting it free.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I spent sometime living in LA, but wasn’t able to break into the entertainment industry as quickly as I would have liked to. I learned a lot, made mistakes, and after things began looking bleak I came back home to start again. I went from cool jobs to nothing, to back on the trail. At my lowest, I was literally sitting in a hotel lobby in tears after a new job training session wondering, “What am I doing?” I was desperate for any job – but this was not it. After I said my goodbyes, I dove into my resume, updated it, made it POP, and covered the city with it. One day out of the blue I got a call for a new writing job and off I went into the media industry with full creative control. It’s easy to give up, but the rewards for pushing on and hanging in there are amazing.
