We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Matt McLear. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Matt below.
Matt, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
My brother was diagnosed with cancer and while he was fighting the disease and getting treatments I would try to stop by and kill time with him. We would often watch Price Is Right. One day he looked at me and said Man I can’t tell if this is a new or old episode because I can’t tell if Drew Carey is fat or not. The issue was he was trying to watch Price is Right getting pumped full of radiation while staring 8-10 feet in the air at the TV that was a 13″ CRTV. You know the old-school TV’s you could play Duck Hunt on. So it was from that day on I said there was no way I could let him or other patients have that same struggle. I was able to donate all of the money to upgrade every single TV in there hopefully helping patients get through their terrible days sitting in those chairs.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
So I’m Matt and go by Beard or Beard Laws. I got into the content creation kind of on accident as I was just telling some people about the Beard Laws I created and people wanted to not only hear more but help write them. I took my somewhat growing brand and did the whole merchandise game but really wanted to pursue a passion of mine, podcasting. Now you might think because my name is Beard Laws I would talk about beard stuff but let’s be honest talking about beards gets old quickly and it only can be interesting to a small circle of people. So I have several podcasts that I run, edit, and produce, and I absolutely love it. I have been able to help several brands grow with the marketing service we offer as well. It’s crazy to think that me growing a beard has grown into what the brand is today. A little of everything but at the end of the day still helping people every single day.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
My audience grew because of the beard and people got to see the real side of me. I feel that too many content creators are not who they truly are. They get known for something they might not necessarily want to be known for but it’s kind of who they are now and I personally hate to see it. I have seen so many content creators land in a niche they never wanted but have felt “stuck. They have tried other niches and always go back to the safety blanket niche. I would highly recommend it to be you, be original, and do what you want to be doing for the time you spend creating. If it’s not genuine and fun for you it will show. Most importantly have fun with it, that is what this whole journey is about!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
There are a lot of snakes in this business. There are a lot of people who will be there for you when they need something and be gone the second they do not anymore. Everyone wants to succeed and most will do anything to achieve it. I have worked with several companies that try to take advantage of you so always know your worth. These days there are so many online tools to know your worth. Always trust your gut and keep your circle small.
