We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Matt Mccune a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Matt, appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
When I came up with the idea to start an insurance agency, I was in a difficult spot. I had trouble finding jobs in the marketing field that I could grow in and be excited about. I always wanted to start my own business but had no idea what I could do. I found the insurance industry was reliable and fairly recession proof, which came in handy because I obtained my licenses right before the pandemic. At this point I had nothing to fall back on, so there was no choice but for this to work. Insurance and financial products have a stigma attached to them, so I have developed a unique approach to helping families by treating them as family and coming up with unique approaches to meet their long term financial goals.

Matt, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Matt McCune, and I am the founder of McCune Financial Group. We specialize in protecting families and small businesses from the unexpected. I entered the industry in 2020 while searching for a business I could start during the pandemic. At the time, I needed to replace my corporate job, which I lost due to COVID-19. Since then, we have helped over 900 families and businesses protect their assets, provide chronic, critical, and terminal illness benefits, and plan for retirement and other significant life events.
We accomplish this through a range of insurance policies and safe money investments, such as fixed annuities and indexed products. Additionally, we offer specialized products for small businesses, including key person insurance, buy-sell agreements, and executive bonus plans for employees.
What sets us apart is the attention to detail we give to each client. We treat everyone as an individual and work together to build a personalized plan that meets their long-term goals. Our goal is to create lifelong relationships by building trust and serving as a dependable resource for any questions or concerns that arise.
Over the past four years, what I have become most proud of is the trust our clients have placed in me. They allow me to be there for their best days as well as their most challenging moments.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
The year 2020 was a pivotal time for people around the world, and I was no exception. I founded McCune Financial Group after losing my job during a period when the job market offered few opportunities. With my back against the wall and unable to afford to stay in my home due to a series of unfortunate circumstances, I knew I had to take matters into my own hands.
I decided to obtain my insurance license and started building relationships within the industry. I am incredibly grateful to the mentors who guided me, provided training, and gave me the opportunity to work remotely with multiple companies. Their support was instrumental in helping me establish my footing in this business.
Since then, I’ve never looked back. I am committed to this path and look forward to continuing this work for the rest of my life.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Word of mouth is the most effective way to grow in the market, and people often share the unique experience we provide. Every day, I have conversations with my clients about some of life’s most difficult moments. Whether we’re discussing what will happen to their estate when they pass away or how their business would be affected if a business partner faced a major medical issue, these conversations are never easy.
To navigate such heavy-hearted discussions, it’s essential to go beyond the role of an underwriter. Providing empathy and understanding in these moments is key. These interactions have not only strengthened my reputation but also helped me stand out in an industry that sometimes carries a stigma.
