We recently connected with Matt McCalpin and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Matt, thanks for joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
The Alluvion’s mission is to provide our community a fresh, one-of-a-kind creative experience with live music, performing arts, visual arts, and a community gathering + event space that is unique to Traverse City in it’s programming, quality, variety, and capacity.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a father, a husband, a musician, and a Traverse City native who moved back to the area five years ago. I have been a creative person, music lover, and a guitar player my whole life, and studied music in Los Angeles at Musicians Institute. Specific to The Alluvion, I am most proud of being able to be a part of this space growing and all of the incredible shows and events we’ve put on that have filled somewhat of a void in Traverse City for many years. As this city grows, we feel that The Alluvion is a key part of this new creative horizon of arts and culture that is stirring and building here now. The Alluvion has three partners: Commongrounds Cooperative (the incredible community Coop building we are inside of), Crosshatch Center for Art & Ecology (a non-profit organization founded and operated by Brad and Amanda Kik), and Jeff Haas (musician and founder of Building Bridges with Music non-profit organization.)
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The feeling you get in the moment of being creative or experiencing another artists work is the reward, the happy place.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Giving others the opportunity, and the space to obtain that feeling of joy either by creating it or enjoying it.
